Should Louis Van Gaal Drop RVP For This Rising Talent? – Manchester United Opinion

When Louis Van Gaal was announced as manager of Manchester United, the first thing that was talked about was who is going to be the captain for the team? Robin Van Persie was the captain of the Dutch national team and there were murmurs floating about that he would be retained as the United captain as well, Van Gaal however chose to make Wayne Rooney as captain.

RVP

There wasn’t much said about that decision then but as the season progresses there seems to be less of a requirement for Van Persie than earlier for Manchester United. An Alex Ferguson purchase, Van Persie was exceptional in his first season for United he scored 26 goals in 28 Premier League games effectively giving them the title.

The next season he didn’t play as many games, he only played 21 times for David Moyes in the league and scored 12 goals, a decent tally but nothing to shout about, this season under Louis Van Gaal, Van Persie has featured 11 times in the league scoring just 3 goals.

A new day, a new star in the making

Van Persie’s paltry return for United might give Louis Van Gaal a hard decision to make in the weekend when they face Hull. Van Persie against Arsenal touched the ball only 13 times throughout the game, the worst for a United player in almost a decade and the worst for a player in the Premier League this season.

It wasn’t like Van Persie was brought on as a substitute either, he played 75 minutes for the Red Devils before he was hauled off by Van Gaal to a boisterous crowd at the Emirates who made him know how they felt about his move from Arsenal to United.

Van Gaal might make the tough decision to drop Van Persie who is yet to do well for the United team this season, in place of him could start the young English striker James Wilson, who is rated very highly by the United coaching staff especially assistant coach Ryan Giggs.

Wilson was even told by Van Gaal to change his jersey number for the season to 49, so that a 9 is included in it, as the Dutchman believes that a striker should have the number 9 on his jersey, which may just be something that Van Gaal believes in.

The striker made his debut for the United first team last season against Hull City and scored a brace for the club, this season he has made 5 appearances for United but hasn’t scored yet for the Red Devils.

Van Persie is 31 years old and does not look a 100% fit at the moment, he may need some time off to get back to being at his best, during this time it would be the best option to give a young player a chance up front. Van Gaal already has played a few youngsters this season like Blackett and McNair, playing a young striker like Wilson with the likes of Di Maria and Rooney for support would only help the youngster grow and fulfill his potential at the club.
