Should Arsenal Go For This £5m Rated Frenchman To Replace Club Stalwart?

Barcay Sagna has time and again proved that he has lost it, his defensive abilities have completely gone down the drain this season and Arsenal may just have to let go the French-man. Although this has been the first season that Sagna showed inconsistencies in his performances, at 30, your are not getting any younger and with a contract that is soon to expire. His contract is due to expire in 2014 and Wenger now wants this right back either to extend his contract or find some other club and in turn help Arsenal improve their coffers a bit more.

According to the Guardian, The French-man has admitted that he is in talks to extend his contract but refused to rule out a move to Paris St-Germain or Monaco

“If I stay at Arsenal, I will try to have a good season – there’s the World Cup at the end of it. If I am to leave, it will be a new challenge,” said Sagna, who joined Arsenal from Auxerre for €9m in July 2007. “There are talks [with Arsenal], but I still haven’t extended my contract. I am talking, and I am not at a bad club either.”

As per reports, PSG are already after Sagna and soon they may make an offer that Arsenal would find too lucrative to miss. That would also help Sagna revive his career who has now been subjected to a lot of brickbats from the supporters of the club.

Although the Gunners have Carl Jenkinson, a capable player to fill in the role of a right back, they would certainly want a back up. A lot of names have been discussed including Nathaniel Clyne of Southampton and Angel Rangel of Swansea. But the one player who stands out among the others is Sochaux right back Sebastien Corchia.

The 22 year old has been outstanding for his club and was one of the main reasons why his club could avoid relegation. Although his age is tender, still he has had plenty of experience of first class football. He is captain of the French national under 21 team and has featured in 34 games for his club this season.

But Arsenal were never the frontrunners to grab him with the defender with the player opting for Olympique Lyonnais as his next destination. But Lyonnais has not agreed to the proposed £5m fee that Sochaux quoted for him. This should be music to Wenger’s ears who now can go all out for the youngster.

And Arsenal are not the only side monitoring the defender with both Bayern Munich and Inter Milan also reportedly interested in him. Thus Wenger would certainly face competition from some of the other top clubs and would like to make this deal as soon as possible.

It must be kept in mind that for a player of his class, the price is certainly nominal and Arsenal should not miss out on this opportunity.

Some of his stats:

Do you think Arsenal should sign Corchia for €5 million? A Bargain well done, I would say!
