Should Arsenal go for this £12.5m shot-stopper?

Rui Patricio

If Arsene Wenger even makes half the transfers that Arsenal are being linked with, then the club would be a thing to look forward in the transfer window and certainly a force to reckon with in the forth coming seasons. But practically they need reinforcements in a number of areas, with the centre forward and a few defensive players apart from the Centre backs being the most vital.

So far Arsenal (or at-least the media) have already made their preference clear for some of the centre forwards with Gonzalo Higuain and Jovetic at the top of their list. But the one area that the club needs to settle down soon is the lack of a dependable goalkeeper.

This season both their keepers Wojciech Szczesny and Fabianksi although have had a good run with the first team they have been unable to impress and that is evident by the mere fact that Wenger has not been able to make up his mind on whom to give the first preference in the team list. Thus when the new season starts, it is a given fact that the Gunners boss would go for a top class goalkeeper to try and make their defence “Invincible”, a word that may ring a few bells in the Arsenal ranks.

While they have been linked to a number of goalkeepers ranging from Valdes to Reina, the one player that the club has been really interested is Rui Patricio of Sporting Lisbon. The 25 year keeper is at the peak of his form and has been a pillar in the defence for his club. He is being considered as one of the best shot-stoppers in Europe at the moment and a move to a bigger club would only suit the player who still has a lot scope for improvement, given his age, which at 25 is still tender for a goalkeeper.

It is being reported that Arsenal has already been turned down for their offer of £8.5m for him and they now need to improve on that.

But an elevated offer of £12.5m should seal the deal for the player who can change the complexion of the Arsenal defence, which has looked fragile at times this season.
