Arsenal’s frugality may become the reason for their downfall in the coming season. While it is typical of Arsenal to spend less in the transfer market, their bid for Riyad Mahrez has the football world in awe.
A season when an untested player like John Stones is moving from one club to another for a fee of £50 million, the Gunners made a bid of £30 million for Riyad Mahrez. Let us forget for the moment who Riyad Mahrez is but the simple fact is that a bid that low for a PFA player of the year is just insane.
Gareth Bale, Luis Suarez, Eden Hazard, none of them could have been sold for £35 million even several years ago, let alone now. Anyway, the meager sum was promptly rejected by the foxes and then Gunners came back with an improved offer, of £35 million.
In a crazy summer transfer market, if the Gunners are hoping to land a PFA player of the year then definitely they need to do better. For now, all we can do is laugh the ridiculousness of the event.
