Why Sheffield Wednesday must fight tooth and nail to hold onto Fernando Forestieri

According to a report by Yorkshire Post, Sheffield Wednesday attacker Fernando Forestieri could leave the club before the European deadline at the end of August.

Losing a player of Forestieri’s calibre would undoubtedly prove to be detrimental for the Owls, who have endured a terrible start to their campaign so far. Jos Luhukay’s men are yet to pick up their first league win so far and they could be in greater trouble if Forestieri decides to move away.

The 28-year-old was injured for a good majority of the previous campaign but he still managed to score 5 goals in 8 matches. And he has started the new season with a bang as well, establishing himself as one of the club’s brightest sparks in this period of gloom and doom.

However, given his skills, it does not make sense for him to continue struggling with Wednesday. It might be a tad unfair but right now, moving out on loan could be the best move for him on a personal level.

Forestieri is one of Wednesday’s best performers and is a lethal striker. He can be a nightmarish prospect for the toughest of defences and his value in the second-tier competition is unparalleled.

If the Owls are to finish the season on a strong note and forget about their lacklustre opening few weeks, they must do everything they can to hold onto his services. Losing him now would make it impossible to find a replacement and it could be quite demoralising for the supporters as well.

Although Wednesday are yet to win a game in the Championship, Forestieri has already scored 2 of their 3 goals this season. In fact, the Owls clearly crumbled in his absence last season and losing him again would jeopardise their hopes of doing better this time out.

Furthermore, they do not have enough time to find a solid replacement and as it is, they failed to sign new players in the summer due to the transfer embargo.

Nevertheless, Forestieri is a talisman for the Owls and he could make all the difference going forward. He is versatile, powerful and is Sheffield’s only source of goals right now. The former Watford man, along with Barry Bannan, is crucial for Wednesday and Luhukay must fight tooth and nail to retain Forestieri’s services.
