Sheffield United opinion: Blades linked with Will Vaulks – Good move?

According to a report in Star, Sheffield United have been linked with a move for Rotherham United midfielder Will Vaulks during this transfer window.

Cardiff City and Norwich City are also in the race to sign the Wales international, who is likely to leave the Millers following relegation from the Championship to League One. (h/t Star)

As per the report, Blades manager Chris Wilder is looking to add at least one central midfielder as he prepares the team for their stint in the Premier League. (h/t Star)

Given Rotherham’s relegation, Vaulks, who has a contract at New York Stadium until next summer, could be available for a reasonable fee, which would suit Sheffield United’s transfer policy. (h/t Star)

Below, we analyse Vaulks’ qualities as a player and conclude why the Blades would be right to sign him:

Vaulks could provide an added midfield option

Will Vaulks is a versatile player who can play in various positions across midfield and defence. Predominantly a defensive midfielder, the 25-year-old can play on either side of a centre-back and could also be used as a right-back, if required.

He is a physically strong player, who possesses great energy and appetite for the game. His reading of the game, playing in defensive midfield has improved over the years, which is a positive sign.

Moreover, Vaulks has a good passing range for a player who generally does the dirty work for the team without possession. He has few limitations to his game, but the energy, desire and work rate covers that up more often than not.

Hence, it makes sense for Sheffield United to sign a player like him as they gear up for Premier League football.

The Rotherham United man may start as a backup option, but he has enough qualities to challenge for a regular place in the team under Chris Wilder.

Conclusion

It is remotely clear that the Blades would need at least one more defensive-minded midfielder in their squad ahead of next season. Getting Vaulks would not only fill that void but also help them in central defence as well.
