Why Sheffield United should go all out for Ollie Watkins in January

According to a report from the Star, Sheffield United are interested in signing Brentford star Ollie Watkins during the January transfer window.

Ollie Watkins, 23, joined Brentford from Exeter City in the summer of 2017 after impressing in the lower leagues of English football.

He has since established himself as one of the best players in the Championship, scoring 10 goals and providing four assists in the 2017-18 season and finding the net 10 times and providing 8 assists last season.

The 23-year-old forward has shone for Brentford this season following the departure of Neal Maupay to Brighton. The forward has scored 13 goals for the Bees so far this campaign after signing a new deal earlier in 2019. With Watkins in a rich vein form in the Championship, Sheffield United must definitely make a move for him next month.

Sheffield United have made a positive start to their first season back at top-flight level, although not a single player has scored much in the league.

Mousset is in great form but there could be times when he’ll have a dry patch. Chris Wilder does have other striking options but the 52-year-old tactician should not hesitate to splash the cash on another forward in January.

Watkins could be the answer to United’s goalscoring problems, having performed extremely well for Brentford over the last two seasons. He has led the Bees’ attack brilliantly this season, taking the mantle of scoring goals after Maupay left Griffin Park before the start of the season.

Truly, the 23-year-old is the go-to-man for Thomas Frank’s side when it comes to scoring goals.

More Sheffield United News:

A versatile forward, Watkins has the ability to play anywhere across the frontline. He is direct in his approach and would add more fluidity to the Blades’ play in the final third.

Truly, securing the Torquay-born star’s signature in January would hand a massive boost to United’s overall squad depth.

Verdict

All in all, the Brentford ace looks capable of improving the Blades’ attack. With that in mind, Wilder must go all out to sign Watkins in the New Year as he would be capable of making a massive difference in their pursuit of a top-half finish.
