Sheffield United signing this prolific €10m Frenchman would make them a fearsome attacking force in the PL

Sheffield United opinion: The Blades should sign Neal Maupay

According to a report in the Star, Sheffield United will have to contend with Sevilla for the signing of Brentford’s French striker, Neal Maupay. The report states that Maupay’s agent has flown to Seville to have discussions with the Spanish side.

Brentford have stamped a valuation of €10m despite the striker having 2 more years left on his contract. After being signed from AS Saint Etienne, the striker had a fantastic 2018/19 campaign, scoring 28 goals and providing eight assists.

The 22-year-old is now ready for the step up and is likely to be part of a big money move in the summer transfer window. After a 12-year absence, Sheffield United are back in the Premier League after securing the second automatic-promotion spot in the Championship.

The Blades weren’t the favourites to make that spot, having to contend with Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United, which goes to show the importance of the work done by their manager, Chris Wilder.

Maupay has a massive presence and the physicality of the Premier League wouldn’t hinder him. He is also very clinical as his stats suggest and the price being quoted is the going rate for most players who can play in England’s elite competition.

Sevilla have a top striker like Wissam Ben Yedder in their ranks so there is no guarantee that Maupay will be getting much game time. At Sheffield, the chances of gaining that are far higher and Chris Wilder is a fantastic coach to work under.

This will also send a real message from the Sheffield United board, that they are looking to continue in the Premier League and have the financial strength to stay in it.

This is going to be a defining transfer window for the club, as chances to play in the Premier League don’t come very often for clubs like Sheffield United and they’ll have to make the most of their chances.

Billy Sharp had a fantastic season for the Blades but he is 33 years old and it would be unfair to depend entirely on him for goals. The Premier League is a very different animal to the Championship.

Maupay is of a good age and this wouldn’t be a risky signing financially as this is now the going rate for most players in any position.

Conclusion

This should be a no-brainer for Wilder and the Sheffield United board should snap up him up before anyone else does.
