Sheffield United Opinion: Why the Blades should go all out for Ronan Curtis?

Back in October 2018, Sheffield United were one of the clubs interested in Portsmouth winger Ronan Curtis. But a move didn’t materialise in the January transfer window and the 23-year-old stayed put at Fratton Park.

In his first season with Pompey, Ronan Curtis was named Portsmouth’s Young Player of the Year. He helped his side to the Checkatrade Trophy while they just missed out on promotion. During that time the 23-year-old also made the step up from Under-21 level to the Republic of Ireland senior side.

Curtis is definitely one of Portsmouth’s prized assets and while the club will look to keep hold of him in the summer, they’ll be helpless if a bigger club come calling. With Pompey missing out on League One promotion, Sheffield United must revive their interest in Curtis.

The Blades have made only a couple of signings this summer following their promotion to the Premier League, finishing in 2nd spot behind champions Norwich City last term. While Sheffield United rarely play a system which incorporates wingers, they will be wanting to add more versatile players to their squad as they take on the Premier League.

A player like Ronan Curtis will allow Wilder’s side to play with more pace on the break, and even if he is not utilised on the wing, he can definitely add something extra through the middle. He is quick and is capable of providing more width to the attack, while his spatial awareness makes him a tactically astute forward.

The Republic of Ireland international has an eye for a killer pass in the final third and can contribute with goals as well. He can play either out wide or in behind the striker, which would see him become a perfect fit in the Blades’ 3-4-1-2 formation.

The addition of Luke Freeman from QPR has given some much-needed energy and legs in United’s attack, which will likely be spearheaded by Billy Sharp and David McGoldrick in the upcoming season.

United’s no.10, Mark Duffy, is approaching the latter stages of his career. Hence, bringing in a younger and dynamic player like Curtis will be a very positive move by the Blades.

Verdict

It would be a huge step up from League One to the Premier League for Ronan Curtis. He’ll certainly need some time to adapt to the demands of the Premier League.

All in all, the 23-year-old will be an ideal fit for Wilder’s brand of football and could turn out to be the missing link that could help the Blades survive in the top-flight next term.
