Sheffield United beating PL duo to sign MLS star for free would be nothing but daylight robbery

Why Nicolas Gaitan would be a massive coup for Sheffield United

According to a report from The Guardian, Sheffield United are among a number of clubs interested in Chicago Fire star Nicolas Gaitan. The Blades’ Premier League rivals West Ham and Aston Villa have also been credited with an interest.

Nicolas Gaitan, 31, is set to leave Chicago Fire when his contract expires at the end of December. He has been plying his trade in the MLS since leaving Dalian Yifang in China. The Argentinean attacker’s return of 4 goals and 11 assists in 27 MLS appearances has alerted the likes of Sheffield United, Aston Villa and West Ham.

The 31-year-old has an option to stay with Chicago Fire, however, the report claims he favours a return to Europe. With that in mind, Sheffield United must do everything in their powers to win the race for Gaitan’s signature.

Sheffield United have enjoyed an impressive return to the Premier League and currently sit fifth in the table. The Blades appear a disciplined, organised and a well-oiled machine under Chris Wilder, whose upcoming task will be to stun Manchester United at Bramall Lane on Sunday.

The Yorkshire giants did spend a good amount in strengthening their squad over the summer. Even though things have worked well for United until now, Wilder should beef up his squad in January when games come thick and fast. Injuries and suspension are a part and parcel of the game but Wilder shouldn’t allow these things to affect his squad.

Scoring goals have been a problem for the Blades, with just 13 goals to show for in 12 games. Wilder has a plethora of strikers at his disposal, so perhaps he should look to add a creative player who can add some much-needed cutting edge to the attack. In that regard, Nicolas Gaitan would be a superb fit at Bramall Lane.

Gaitan is a highly experienced player with top European and international pedigree, even though he hasn’t played for Argentina since 2016.

He has plenty of winning experience as well, with four league titles to his name during his time in Europe. There’s no doubting his quality and ability to turn games single-handedly on his day.

The Argentinean is a dynamic dribbler who can also contribute by netting or creating a few important goals for his side. His versatility to play in various positions across the midfield and attack could also come handy for Wilder’s side.

Verdict

Even at 31, Gaitan can still offer top-quality service for the next couple of years. On a potential free transfer (as his contract at Chicago Fire expires at the end of December), the Argentinean attacker would be a massive coup if United manage to snap him up.
