“Shameful performance by the team. Embarrassing” Tottenham Fans In Meltdown After 2-0 Loss To Arsenal + Match Report

Match Report: Arsenal 2-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur had to settle for a shock 2-0 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates stadium. Goals from Shkodran Mustafi and Alexis Sanchez sealed the Gunners’ fate in the first half itself, as Spurs were unable to equalise.

There was a bit of drama concerning the first goal for Arsenal. Tottenham indignantly voiced their displeasure at Mike Dean’s decision to award the set-piece after Davinson Sanchez was believed to have fouled Alexis Sanchez. Arsene Wenger’s men made no mistake as Mustafi slotted a Mesut Ozil free-kick into the net. Arguably, that may have tipped things in Arsenal’s favour but Spurs did not even do anything to offset the goals. Harry Kane and Dele Alli were invisible for large parts of the game and there was a shocking – almost unusual – lack of pace in Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

Sanchez then went on to double Arsenal’s advantage and while the home side erupted in joy, Spurs fans looked on in horror. This performance does come as a shock especially considering how strong Tottenham were in their last couple of matches. Although Spurs tried desperately to carve a way back into the game after halftime, their attack simply could not penetrate a resilient Arsenal defence. Both Alli and Kane seemed weak and this could prove to be a problem for them in the coming days.

Only Eric Dier gave Petr Cech some sort of trouble as the goalkeeper made an astonishing save to deny a header with less than 10 minutes left on the clock. Besides that, Spurs simply looked lost. Their defenders, midfielders and attackers were out-played on every level compared to their Arsenal counterparts.

Pochettino did substitute Kane and Alli after a series of frustrating errors from the duo but even that could not undo the damage. He is likely to be concerned about how vulnerable his team looked despite making a remarkable start to the Premier League season. There were some encouraging moments for Spurs immediately after the break but it was just not enough.

This defeat will mark Pochettino’s first North London derby loss. The fact is that the club struggled majorly because of Kane’s lack of pace up front which does place stress on the need for Spurs to reduce their dependency on him. It was of utmost necessity for Spurs to pick up 3 points today but this loss will undoubtedly dent their chances of catching up Manchester City – let alone make a strong title challenge.
