Sensational Ronaldo, Classy Casemiro: The best and the worst-rated Real Madrid players vs PSG

Classy Ronaldo, Sensational Casemiro – The best and the worst-rated players as Real Madrid beat PSG 2-1

Real Madrid progressed to the last eight of the UEFA Champions League by beating competition contenders Paris Saint Germain 2-1. They took a healthy lead of 3-1 in the previous leg and Ronaldo’s first goal of the match almost sealed a ticket to the quarterfinals. Further, Casemiro’s deflected effort saw the ball in the back of the net and helped the Galacticos qualify by a 5-2 aggregate. Marco Verratti picked up a second yellow but just minutes later, Cavani reduced the deficit to some extent.

Early on, Areola’s outstretched leg kept PSG in the game and for most of the first half, the match remained cagey. Ramos too, leapt high and forced a fabulous save off the PSG gloveman. The Paris-based club threatened late through Mbappe but ultimately, it was too late to join the party. Overall, it was a dominant display by the Spanish side.

Here are the Real Madrid player ratings –

Keylor Navas: 7/10

Unlucky to have conceded and not keep a well-deserved clean sheet but other than that, nothing wrong from his part. Navas made his routine saves and rose to the occasion.

Keylor Navas

Daniel Carvajal: 8/10

Carvajal looked to be in total control throughout the match. He was a constant threat going forward and also, kept Di Maria in check for the most part.

Sergio Ramos: 9/10

Ramos set up a rock-solid defensive back line, which seemed almost unbreakable for the French giants. He read the game almost perfectly, stood tall and tackled sharply.

Raphael Varane: 9/10

Varane was a mammoth figure at the back. He kept out the set-piece threat by PSG, dismantled the attack many times and partnered extremely well with Ramos.

Marcelo: 8.5/10

Had his runs planned, attacked with dare and flair and lined up dangerous deliveries into the box. He covered lost ground real quickly to keep the defensive shape.

Casemiro: 9/10

The defensive midfielder stood to his task excellently. He is such a student of this game. Casemiro kept the attack going by spreading out a diverse range of passes, keeping hold of the ball and gaining back possession whenever required.

Casemiro might be perfect for Manchester United.

Mateo Kovacic: 8.5/10

Kovacic’s movement and ability to hold off challenges came in handy. He moved around well, moulded and manoeuvred the midfield and always invited a pass.

Lucas Vazquez: 8/10

Lucas’ vision was in the middle of proceedings when he set up Ronaldo for the header. He never gave up, offered quality and pace.

Marco Asensio: 8/10

Should have scored late on but apart from that, was absolutely sublime. He linked up well with Marcelo and was a nightmare for Alves. Asensio’s vision truly helped him in the game.

Karim Benzema: 5/10

Held the ball up well, ran down the right channels but squandered an easy opportunity to score and later on, missed out on a counter-attack by selfishly going all by himself.

Cristiano Ronaldo: 9.5/10

He stepped up to give his side the lead like no one else. He timed his jump perfectly, attacked the ball and finished it exquisitely. Ronaldo was at the top of his game whenever on the ball. A world class act.

Substitutes –

Toni Kroos: 7.5/10

Brought in a vision, kept the flow going and shut out any attack from PSG. He applied himself well.

Gareth Bale: 7.5/10

Got into the act as soon as he came off the bench. He ran down the wings, injected energy into the match and performed defensive duties.

Isco: NA

Not enough time to make an impact.
