Keep Or Sell – What Should Manchester United Do With Matteo Darmian

After a couple of lacklustre displays in December, Manchester United are under immense pressure to do better in the coming months. A lot of their players have been subjected to criticism lately and one new addition to that list is Matteo Darmian.

After his weak performance against Bristol City, he has earned the ire of the United faithful and if reports are to be believed, the player is likely to exit Old Trafford in January. He has been more of a contingency plan all this while, so what should United do with him?

Straight off the bat, the player has been starved of first-team opportunities this season. Primarily a right-back, Darmian has been iced out of the squad for quite some time. Antonio Valencia has proven to be a solid player in that role and that has prompted Jose Mourinho to start him ahead of Darmian, who has played just 11 times this season. The Italian has also struggled with injuries and all that has just contributed to his stunted growth and development.

When Darmian initially joined United, he showed a lot of promise but that has just fizzled out with time. He arrived at Old Trafford from Torino but could be looking to move back to the Serie-A with the likes of Juventus interested in him.

The player is skilled and could still put some top-class performances at the age of 28 but perhaps it is not the best option for him to stay back with United. Going forward, it seems to be quite clear that he is not part of Mourinho’s plans and that is something likely to have been further compounded by the Bristol City fiasco.

Maybe he could thrive in a different set-up but things have not worked out in his best interests during his time with the Red Devils. He has often struggled with pace and movement and has been reduced to a fringe player of sorts. Surely, he deserves another chance to regain the kind of power he showed at Torino but for that to happen, Manchester United does not seem like the best option – at least not right now.

There is a lot of frustration surrounding the club, manager and players in general. Although they won against Everton recently, their performance was far from their best and to rectify that, they need to work on a lot of quarters. At a time like this, they cannot afford to have a player like Darmian in the ranks. Perhaps as a contingency plan, yes, but that would be unfair to Darmian and hence, selling him is probably the best option.
