A Scout Report Of Greenock Morton’s Thomas O’Ware
Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly interested in bringing in Greenock Morton centre-back Thomas O’Ware this summer. The former Scotland under-18 international, at 24-years of age, may need to take a step up the footballing ladder very soon.
Wolves already have a good left-sided centre-back in England under-21 international Kortney Hause. The former West Ham youth player has started to strike up a good partnership with club captain Danny Batth of late. But at just 21-years of age he may need to be given some time to develop.
With this in mind, Wolves will need cover in every position, if they are to get away from the bottom end of the Championship next season and challenge for promotion. This is where O’Ware fits in. The man from Irvine can also play at left-back and his versatility is a selling point.
Time will tell whether or not Hause is a better player, but for now, O’Ware brings first team experience, having represented Morton 139 times in the league so far. What can we expect from him though? Below we explore a few key areas of O’Ware’s play:
Footballing Background
O’Ware spent 5 years in the Rangers academy before being released, and he managed to spend another two years with Kilmarnock’s youngsters. From there, he was not given a chance in the first team and moved to play local football for community club Bonnyton Thistle.
He then came to the notice of Championship side Greenock Morton at the age of 19 and was snapped up, before being thrown in at left-back for his debut in Scotland’s second tier. He made 39 league appearances over the next three seasons.
Despite relegation in 2014, O’Ware stayed with Morton and went on to establish himself in the team. 34 league appearances followed that promotion season and now O’Ware once again plies his trade in the Championship.
Style Of Play
O’Ware is now regarded as a real leader in the Morton side and a go-to player for the boss. He reads the game incredibly well and looks ready for bigger challenges beyond this season.
Whether at left-back or centre-back, O’Ware is capable of getting forward during games and has hit 10 goals this season from defensive positions. Given his exploits at left-back and the fact that he is comfortable in midfield too, makes him a wonderful addition. O’Ware has now blossomed into a fine ball-playing centre-back.
What Does The Future Hold?
All sorts of clubs are now showing an interest and they appear to be tracking the defender. His talent is blossoming now and he looks like the type of player who would get better and better.
The worst thing he could do is aim too high and spend too much time on the bench. A move to either Rangers (where he spent time as a youth player) or to the English Championship looks ideal.
