Scout Report: Max Meyer

Schalke fans must have been a little upset seeing their talisman Julian Draxler leave at the start of the season, it would have hurt even more seeing the talented attacker move to a rival Bundesliga club Wolfsburg, but there is some good news, in fact, a lot of it for the fans.

Schalke have been blessed with many talented youngsters and another one is doing his bit in making a name in the Bundesliga. Max Meyer has almost become the main person for most Schalke attacks to start from but who is the highly rated youngsters?

Another German wonder kid

Meyer played for many youth clubs before signing for  Schalke in 2009. He won instant success with the U19 team at Schalke, but he finally broke into the first team for good in 2013 season when he was given the number 7 jersey, worn by legend Raul earlier.

All in all, he has made 102 appearances for Schalke since joining them and is only 20-years-old. He has the ability to play either as an attacker or an attacking midfielder. Meyer has a gifted left foot, which certainly helps him if he wants to cut in from the right-hand side. He has great ability and control, which helps him get past opponents.

He also has great speed and dribbling ability and is exceptional in one-on-one situations. He has a great shot in him and he can also provide assists playing in the hole behind the main striker. His pace and ability to feed his strike partner is his greatest asset and something which will grow as he gets better and plays more games.

Meyer though does have a few issues with his game; well it isn’t with his game but rather his build. He isn’t the tallest or the bulkiest player in the world and can easily get pushed off the ball. He is somewhat like Mario Gotze, he can drift in and out of tight spaces with the utmost ease and he uses his intelligence and speed to get away from defenders.

He does have tremendous work rate which makes him one of the few players who is willing to put in the miles in attack and defence. Something which every Premier League club would want, he was earlier linked with a move to Arsenal or Liverpool, but that did not take place, however, it only is a matter of time before some big club comes in and picks him up.
