Scout Report: Dayot Upamecano

Too young to drive a car in most countries, and certainly too young to taste the bubbly, Dayot Upamecano is the next rising star in French football but more than that, he seems to be a target for Manchester United and their rivals, Manchester City.

The French central defender is only 16-years-old and a tug of war has begun to capture the player. Dayot Upamecano currently plays for the Valenciennes side, at the under 19 level, so why is everyone so crazy about signing a player who has not featured for the first team as of yet? Let us find out.

A towering defender with a lot of time in his hands

The young defender has represented the French squad in the youth system and continues to play in the U17 side for now. The team won the U17 championship in Bulgaria and was one of the few players to have represented their team for over 400 minutes in the championship; the French team did not even concede a single goal till the second half of their semi-final.

It is often a tough ask to understand just how good a young player will develop later on in his career but based on the teams after him Upamecano does have a bright future about him. He still is young and has time to develop his overall game and his physical attributes still have time to grow and get better.

He isn’t the most towering player in the world but what would you expect from a 16-year-old? What he does have is the want and desire to play almost every game and that would serve him well at Manchester United. The Red Devils or any other club that does sign him would probably keep him in their academy for a season or two, just to check how he progresses before loaning him out to another club to gain first-team experience.

Hopefully, the young defender knows which club he would want to go to, we all remember just how well Paul Pogba grew up at United and then left the club; he still is regarded as one of the best midfielders in the World today and is young enough to grow and get better later on. Dayot would need to keep a level head if he is bought by either of the big clubs, he still would need to work extremely hard to make a name for himself there.
