The search for a top quality winger never ends and especially for the likes of Liverpool and Chelsea, the search is all so more important. While the Reds have never had a really good winger in ages, the form of Eden Hazard has gone down the drain for Chelsea and even their earlier signings such as Juan Cuadrado, Mohamed Salah and Marko Marin haven’t been able to provide much to the Blues.
The player on the radar for both the clubs is Andriy Yarmolenko and we take a closer look as to what makes the Ukrainian such hot property for the two Premier League clubs.
Yarmolenko is not an unknown name when it comes to being linked with English clubs. There were some talks about the 26-year-old signing a deal with Everton and Arsenal but it did not come to fruition.
Yarmolenko is one of the best Ukrainian players in the world and it comes as no surprise that he would be willing to move away from the Ukrainian Premier League with the one club he has represented, Dynamo Kiev.
He joined the club at the tender age of 13 but was shuffled across various clubs as he wasn’t built for the game. He did end up joining Dynamo full time and was sent out to their second team to gain experience.
Playing for the second side did help and with his performances, he was dubbed as the new Shevchenko, especially for his strength and pace. Even the then vice-president of the club stated that Yarmolenko could become a top-level player.
Yarmolenko can play as a central striker but his best position is playing out wide, especially as a right winger. He does have a great scoring record despite playing as a winger; he has 110 goals from 284 appearances for the Kiev-based club.
The Kiev winger has also scored 14 goals in 28 games this season in all competitions for the Ukrainian club. Yarmolenko is known for his explosive speed and his finishing as well, something that the legendary Shevchenko was known for.
He is also built rather well and would be a perfect player for the Premier League and doesn’t get bullied off the ball easily. He isn’t the fastest winger in the world and his crossing isn’t the greatest as he prefers to have a go at goal rather than try to set up others.
He also had some great games for the national side and has become a permanent fixture for the side. Yarmolenko might be a diamond in the rough, someone that would work out great if a team is willing to splash the cash on him and it is only a matter of time before he does make his move out from Ukraine.
