Scout Report: Alex Telles (Chelsea Target), The Next Roberto Carlos?

Scout Report: Alex Telles

Chelsea’s hunt for a new young defender seems to be heading for some Turkish delight, the English club need to bring in a few defenders who could provide cover to the aging John Terry and hopefully step up in a few seasons and play in the first team. Jose Mourinho seems to know which player he wants and when he decides to go for someone there is no stopping him.

The club sold Filipe Luis recently, back to Atletico Madrid and could be looking to bolster their defensive options and news reports link Chelsea with a move for Alex Telles from Galatasaray. The 22-year-old left-back only moved to the club in 2014 but just what is he all about and why do Chelsea want to sign him?

Brazilian and brilliant in attack

The 22-year-old might be playing in the Turkish league and that shows that he could be ready to move to a bigger league. The Brazilian plays primarily as a left-back but can play in any position down the left and has been known to provide a lot of support going up the field. He can be deployed as a winger as well, preferably down the left.

Telles is a throwback to the old Brazilian players who would know only to attack and just about defend, or is he the new age of Brazilian players who knows only to attack? Either way, many have called him as the next Roberto Carlos, but he is far from being that good at the moment. Telles does have great ability in attack, but his defensive abilities are something he needs to work on.

The 22-year-old has great speed and acceleration which allows him to close down attackers or join the attack if needed; he can also bomb up and down the field rather quickly. He also has great jumping ability and stamina, which is perfect for some who needs to, put in a shift almost on a regular basis. His passing is a bit of a concern and his long passes often go awry, but that shouldn’t be something to worry about when it comes to playing in a team as talented as Chelsea.

The greatest ability he has is that he can play in multiple positions which will be a boon to any manager in this age of football. Jose Mourinho would need to work a bit on the Brazilian but if things work out, he could be better than Filipe Luis at least.
