Rooney To Newcastle United? The Beginning Of Countless Rumours

Rooney going to Newcastle United? Reasons why it will not happen.

Newcastle United have been linked with a shock move for Wayne Rooney. Although it has very much been publicised about Rooney’s desire to leave Old Trafford but will St James’ Park be his next home? This isn’t the first time Newcastle have bid for the former Evertonian, they had a £25 million pound bid rejected for the star right before he joined the red devils.

 Transfer Policy

Newcastle United has put in place a strict transfer policy. In recent seasons the Toon Army has seen less big names fill up their stadium and have been replaced by lesser-known individuals. Gone are the days when Newcastle would spend millions on big star names. Ever since the travesty that was Michael Owen’s Newcastle Career and relegation to the Championship.

When looking at potential new players the club goes off a number of key points:

Low reputation – With this comes low transfer fees and low wages, as shown with a number of players the signed recently such as, Yohan Cabaye and Hatem Ben Arfa who epitomise the transfer policy. Both players when signed had a low reputation, costing £4.3 million and £5.75 million respectively, but now if Newcastle were to sell they could get double figures for both. However Rooney does not fit this point in anyway, shape or form, will his reputation be too nig for the club?

Hunger – Ever since their relegation into the Championship, Newcastle had a huge clearout of squad members that were not willing to fight for the club, and since then have only signed who shore a willing and desire to play for Newcastle. Again will Rooney be happy fighting for the club in a relegation battle rather then be playing for the league title.

Under 25 – It has been rumoured that in order to buy a player over this age that Alan Pardew needs permission from Mike Ashley, obviously Rooney again doesn’t fit this criteria but I am sure there would be no problem in getting the permission to overlook this point.

Rooney himself has already been linked to numerous clubs since it was announced he wanted to leave Manchester United, with PSG, Manchester City and Bayern Munich all been touted as possible destinations for the England forward.

So the question is where would Rooney rather go, what the clubs above can offer the player that Newcastle can’t is Champions league football, so whether Rooney would give up playing European football next year for a team that has spent most of the current season struggling near the bottom is a big ask. His wages would be a huge problem if Newcastle were to sign him, the likelihood of Newcastle been able to match or even increase his wages is a big ask and one I don’t think the club can fulfil. However clubs such as PSG would have no problem in the financial department, so whether Rooney sees his future in the English game or over in a foreign league, is a decision only he can make.

If Newcastle were able to pull off the shock signing of Rooney, it would be a massive coup for the club and may signal there intent on breaking back into the top 4, as they did during Sir Bobby Robson’s reign. It would also be a massive boost for the fans and the club in shirt sales and merchandise alone.

Wherever Rooney does end up, whether he stays at Manchester United or continues his career somewhere else, I can assure you from now until the end of the next transfer window, there will be numerous clubs linked with the player and not just Newcastle United.
