Manchester United have been one of the busiest clubs in England ever since former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho took over the Old Trafford outfit. Having made a number of star signings in the summer, Mourinho now sees his team active in 3 competitions at the moment (now that they’ve won the EFL cup) and he will be happy with the way his team has performed in the last couple of months. The manager will look to add further players to the squad in the summer and this might see him sell a few players from the squad and one player who might not be at the club at the start of the next season is English international Wayne Rooney.
One of the most prolific goalscorers in England and the top goalscorer for Manchester United in their history, their current skipper, Wayne Rooney, has not been able to cement a place in the starting XI this season and Mourinho was reportedly ready to let him leave even before the end of February. Rooney revealed that he wants to fight for his place till the end of the season but he might look to leave, especially with his boyhood club Everton interested in his signature. So there is every chance that Wayne Rooney could leave Old Trafford in the summer but how will Manchester United fans feel if this move goes through?
It is a question that has been dividing opinions among fans on the club on social media. For fans that have looked at the striker since his move to the club from Everton back in 2004, it is hardly believable that Manchester United want to let him leave before he puts an end to his career. Rooney, has helped Manchester United to some great achievements in the past and at just 31, there is no doubt that he can repeat this feat more than once before calling it quits. He has plenty of football left in him and his experience of winning at the highest level will help the club not just on the field but also in the dressing room. As a senior player at the club, probably the most senior, Rooney has the respect of most fans who do not want him to be sold. This set of fans would be devastated and will probably look at the moment United sold Wayne Rooney to pin failures in the future.
On the other hand, there are sects of people who are convinced that he is done. Rooney has not been able to keep himself fit when needed and this has been an issue for a couple of years now. He has not been able to play constantly and has not been able to show the same kind of commitment playing just once or twice a month. He has potential, but United cannot probably stick with him for too long, hoping he would come good. So, many believe that the skipper’s time at the club is up and want Mourinho to sell him in the summer. Surely, these fans want a star signing in the summer, don’t they?
At his age, Rooney has enough left in him to deserve to stay at the club for longer while his Brand name will also help the club milk dollars with his image. One look at the official site of the club will tell you how important Wayne Rooney is for United’s promotional activities. A player like Rooney, one for the history books of Manchester United, should not leave the club in the way that really damages his reputation and years of hard work. He must rather leave the club at his own will or probably retire at Old Trafford. He deserves it.
