Full Time: Newcastle United 1-0 Burton Albion

Newcastle United reclaimed their top spot in the EFL Championship when they defeated Burton Albion 1-0 at St. James’ Park on Wednesday night.

Despite what the narrow scoreline suggests, the Magpies had a pretty comfortable outing, with the only goal of the game coming from Matt Ritchie in the 68th minute, who has been in brilliant form in recent weeks.

The win sees Newcastle edge closer to the promotion and also reclaim the summit position after Brighton had taken over the spot with a win on Tuesday night. Here is how the Newcastle players fared in the game.

Newcastle United Player Ratings

Karl Darlow – 7/10

Made an outstanding save to deny the equalizer in the second half. Solid and commanding display as usual in between the sticks from the 26-year old.

Vurnon Anita – 7/10

Rarely tested on the right-hand side of the defence. One of the most comfortable nights he will have played in.

Jamaal Lascelles – 7/10

Put in an improved performance compared to the weekend. Was a force to be reckoned with in the air, winning almost everything that came his way.

Chancel Mbemba – 7/10

A surprise inclusion into the line-up. Showed no signs of rust despite having played so very less this season. Read the game very well.

Paul Dummett – 7.5/10

Another reliable performance down the left-hand side. Was solid at the back and provided a great outlet going forward.

Jonjo Shelvey – 7/10

Was afforded loads of space in the middle of the park, which allowed him to control the proceedings and pull the strings. However, his influence wore down as the game progressed.

Mohamed Diame – 6/10

Looks better playing in a deeper role than he does when operating in an advanced position. A Considerably improved performance compared to the weekend game.

Matt Ritchie – 9/10

The difference maker again for Newcastle. Scored the only goal of the game with a cracking right-footed effort. Should have had one more if not for the chalked off penalty. Brilliant once again.

Ayoze Perez – 7/10

Full of running and creativity in the attacking third. Should have got himself on the scoresheet in the second half.

Christian Atsu – 6/10

Started the game brightly by linking up with well with Dummett. However, he faded as the game progressed. He’s had better games before.

Dwight Gayle – 7/10

Had a good game at the top of the attack. Committed the encroachment foul that saw the referee controversially chalk off Ritchie’s penalty.

Substitutes

Sammy Ameobi – NA

Replaced Atsu with less than two minutes left to play on the clock.

Daryl Murphy – NA

Came on for Gayle in the stoppage time.
