Revealed: Manchester United Were Desperate To Sign This Player (Not Pogba)

Mourinho

Jose Mourinho is expected to take the unusual path to his suiting at Manchester United. While known for buying established players, the Portuguese is also keeping an eye on young talents who could become stars of the future.

One such player, Breel Embolo, is someone Manchester United were desperate to sign as per Schalke sporting director Christian Heidel. The 19 year old has recently joined Schalke but Heidel says that the German club acted quickly and decisively when they realized that there were strong interest from Manchester United and Arsenal for the player.

‘There are a number of reasons why we signed Embolo,’ Heidel said.

‘First and foremost there are sporting reasons. It’s nothing new that he is a great player. There is a reason why Mourinho desperately wanted to sign him for Manchester United.’

He added: ‘When we realised there was a possibility that we could miss out on signing him due to other clubs’ interest, we had to move fast.

‘President Clemens Tonnies happily made his plane available. We flew out to Montpellier at 1300 CET and returned five hours later. We had wrapped up the deal in that short period.’

Embolo is considered one of the hottest prospects in Europe and has scored 13 goals and provided 9 assists for Basel last season. Despite his young age, he has made 40 senior appearances for the club. While he has been missed by both Manchester United and Arsenal, looks like the Premier League is not all about buying established names after all.
