Rekindling interest in this out-of-favour Liverpool star in January can propel Watford to greater heights

Watford should sign Lazar Markovic to add more depth to their squad

According to a previous report from the Telegraph, Watford were interested in signing Liverpool winger Lazar Markovic. However, a move did not materialize last season and the Serbian spent time on loan at Anderlecht.

Markovic was signed by Liverpool back in 2014 from Portuguese club Benfica for a fee of £20million but he has proven to be one of Liverpool’s most flop signing in the last decade.

The 24-year-old enjoyed a successful spell with Benfica in the 2013-14 season and helped the Portuguese giants to a domestic treble.

However, he hasn’t fulfilled his potential at Merseyside, making only 19 appearances for the Reds in the Premier League and netting twice.

He showed glimpses of rediscovering his mojo on his loan spell at Hull City but that wasn’t enough for him to get back into Liverpool’s first-team plans.

As of now, he is an outcast who is almost without a club as it has been ages since he has played in the Premier League. The 24-year-old has failed to make it to the matchday squads for any of Liverpool’s games this term.

Quite clearly, his career has come to a standstill at Anfield and loan spells at different clubs and under different managers haven’t helped him rediscover the magic that once made him a £20 million player.

As things stand, a move away from Anfield to Vicarage Road would be a win-win situation for all parties involved. While Markovic is likely to get more regular minutes at Watford to get his career back on track, the Hornets will have the luxury of having a useful creative winger in their ranks.

It has been a good start to the season for Javi Gracia’s men. The Hornets took the Premier League by storm with four back-to-back victories but suffered a dip in form, going winless for the next four games which included three defeats. However, they have managed to get their campaign running once again with consecutive victories over Wolves and Huddersfield Town.

The Hornets sit 7th in the standings with six wins out of ten games and they should set their sights on securing a Europa League qualifying spot next season. But to do that, they need more depth in their squad and that why they should rekindle their interest in Lazar Markovic.

The 24-year-old might have struggled to make an impact at Anfield but he is far from a spent force. Blessed with a decent technique, Markovic is a fast and agile player who likes to take on defenders down the flanks with his silky dribbling skills. Not only does he like to cut inside from the flanks but he is also good at linking-up the play from the wide areas.

Watford have Will Hughes who has done a good job down the right-hand side of the pitch. Gerard Deulofeu is another player who can play down the right and through the centre. However, bringing Markovic will only add more depth to the squad, which might prove to be helpful once the injuries start to creep in as the season wears on.

That said, Watford should reignite their interest in the 24-year-old Serbian and snap him up for a cut-price deal in January.
