Reasons Why Manchester United Does Not Need Marquee Signings Like Muller, Vidal And Hummels

Manchester United reshuffled their squad this season after a disastrous previous season. The man at the helm of affairs was changed. Dutch manager Louis van Gaal brought in several quality players. Among the new inductees, the most influential signings were Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid and Radamel Falcao on loan from AS Monaco. With the likes of Wayne Rooney, Robin van Persie and Juan Mata already in the team, these two additions were like icing on the cake. He also bought 3 defenders, but to everyone’s surprise all were of the same position, left back. Even though there was a dearth of quality center backs after Nemanja Vidic and RioFerdinand left the club, the Dutchman seemed to have ignored that area. In fact, the formation which Louis van Gaal opted for his team i.e. 3-52, demands quality center backs. They have the likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Johny Evans, etc, but none are of great caliber. The defense has been the area of concern for Manchester United so far in the season.

Manchester United has been linked with several defenders and attackers, among whom some of the names are high profile. The likes of Mat Hummels in defense, Arturo Vidal in defensive midfield and Thomas Muller in the attacking midfield role has been linked with the club in this transfer window.

Mats Hummels

Here are few reasons which can convince the club fans that United does not need these high profile signings.

Mat Hummels- The German center back is one of the best defenders in the world right now. He had fabulous World Cup this year and has been rock solid in both Borussia Dortmund as well as in the German defense. He could be available in this transfer window for a mammoth transfer fee. While Manchester United needs a talismanic defender, spending such a huge amount for a single player is not what the club can afford to. Manchester United is linked with several other quality center backs like Ezequiel Garay, who can be roped in for a much lesser price. It has to be kept in mind that the club has already spent a huge sum of money in the summer. So they have to keep their spending under check in this transfer window.

Arturo Vidal- Arturo Vidal is likely to cost Manchester United somewhere around £40 million. We do not have any doubt that the Chilean is extremely talented and his presence in any team would add extra weight to the squad, but we have to keep in mind that Manchester United already has several good players in the same position like Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera, Marouane Fellaini and even Daley Blind. United had bought Herrera from Athletico Bilbao this summer. So it won’t be a good decision to invest 40 million within 6 months to bring a player of the same position.

Thomas Muller- This is the latest transfer speculation which arose a few days back. It is surprising that Louis van Gaal has shown interest to buy an attacker, even though they possess some of the best attacking options in the word. Thomas Muller predominantly plays in the attacking zone of the midfield and can also play as a false 9 striker when required. We have no doubt that the German is one of the best in the business right now. Accordingly Manchester United will have to shell out a huge transfer fee to rope in Muller. It is absolutely not a wise decision to spend a lump sum for Thomas Muller when you already have one of the best attacking units in the world.
