Analyzing Liverpool’s transfer window: What made the Reds successful?

Liverpool have done exceptionally well by signing high-quality players to improve a few positions ahead of the new season. Manager Jurgen Klopp should be delighted by the influx of these new stars and gel them into a fantastic team as soon as possible.

The Reds came fourth last season and played the Champions League final as well but certain departments had to be strengthened further. With that in mind, let’s take a look at how Liverpool fared in the recently concluded transfer window.

Analyzing the players bought this summer

Loris Karius’ mistakes against Real Madrid in Kiev were close to unforgivable because of the stature of the game. So, Liverpool had to dip in the market for a new world-class goalkeeper, and they have signed Alisson from Roma. The Brazilian is not only a fantastic shot-stopper but is also adept at playing out from the back and starting counter-attacks with his quick distribution.

Fabinho

Skipper Jordan Henderson has done a tremendous job as a defensive midfielder but the Reds were in dire need of an accomplished No. 6. To that end, signing Fabinho from Monaco was key in various aspects as the Brazilian can play across several positions while being a fabulous defensive midfielder.

The front-three has been sensational thus far but an injury to Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino or Sadio Mane could have potentially derailed the club’s progress. Hence, Liverpool made an excellent move by signing Xherdan Shaqiri from Stoke City. The Swiss can play either as a No. 10 and offer support to the front line or act as an able replacement for one of them.

Naby Keita

Naby Keita’s deal was done and dusted last summer but the Guinean arrived at Merseyside during pre-season. Liverpool often lacked creative edge from the midfield last season and Keita has those attributes in abundance.

Where they lacked

It is not advisable to be greedy when you have already enjoyed a fantastic window. However, Liverpool could have truly completed their squad by signing a top-class centre-back. It would have offered them a greater edge over their rivals, potentially charging them towards a direct competition with champions Manchester City.

Now, it is up to the likes of Dejan Lovren, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Ragnar Klavan to partner Virgil van Dijk and become a viable centre-back option for the manager. Liverpool will require the Dutchman to stay fit for most parts of the season in order to challenge City.
