Rangers FC opinion: Gerrard signing Sheyi Ojo makes a lot of sense

According to reports from English news outlet the Daily Mail, Rangers are inching closer to a move for Liverpool star Sheyi Ojo.

The Gers have been linked with a move in the past but nothing materialized. However, now the Mail has reported that they are very close to a move for the Liverpool star with Steven Gerrard at the helm.

Because barring Eros Grezda, the club has no wingers in their prime. Both Jamie Murphy and Daniel Candeias are itching towards retirement while Scott Arfield has transformed into a central midfielder.

That leaves them with just Glenn Middleton and while the 19-year-old has done well for the club in the final few days of the season, he’s not quite ready yet.

He’s more of a long term solution and right now the Gers need more than just a long term option.

They need someone who can make an impact right now because that is exactly what Celtic are doing and to demolish the monopoly on the Scottish Premiership right now, Rangers need new additions to help them out.

It’s exactly where someone like Ojo walks in and while the Liverpool star did struggle during his spell at Stade Reims, he can do so much better than that.

His previous spells in the Championship, with better sides, saw the 21-year-old tearing the league up. With Fulham last season, Ojo finished with 22 appearances and contributed to six goals.

With Wolves before that, he finished with 19 appearances and contributed to seven goals. Those aren’t world class numbers but they’re numbers that will help Rangers do well in the near future.

Combine that with his searing pace, dribbling ability and physicality and it makes him a perfect fit for the Rangers and the Premiership. His versatility to play across the front-line will be an added bonus, with Sheyi Ojo capable of playing even as a number 10.

It’s all the more reason why the club should get the deal over the board as fast as possible before someone else decides to walk and make a move. The 21-year-old is rather talented and his past in the Championship has shown that Ojo can knock it in a physically dominant league.

Conclusion

The Rangers have a lot of work to be done on their team before they even catch up to Celtic but with time and the right players, they can do just that.

Furthermore adding someone like Sheyi Ojo will help the club move in the right direction and even if it’s a loan move, the 21-year-old should be able to make a big impact.
