Rangers signing this 26-year-old Czech star would make them worthy of a title challenge next season

Rangers opinion: Tomas Kalas would be a smart signing for the Gers

According to a report from the Scotsman, Rangers have made an offer for Chelsea defender Tomas Kalas, although they face a lot of competition from English clubs.

The Czech Republic defender, 26, was in fine form for Championship side Bristol City last season on loan, making 41 appearances as the club finished 8th in the table.

He has been sent on loan six times in nine years as a Chelsea player and could be in need of a permanent home ahead of next season.

Since arriving at Chelsea as a highly-rated teenager, Kalas has enjoyed loans at Sigma Olomouc, Vitesse Arnhem, FC Koln, Middlesbrough and Fulham before this year’s stay at Bristol City.

He has only made four first-team appearances for the Blues and he has to move on if he is to find a permanent home.

Rangers would be the ideal destination for the 26-year-old defender. The Gers have already made six signings so far in this summer transfer window, with George Edmundson the latest to arrive at the Ibrox from Oldham Athletic.

Steven Gerrard impressed in his first season as manager at Ibrox by securing the club’s highest league finish since 2012. He’ll be keen to end Celtic’s domination in Scotland and for that to happen, recruitment has to be spot on this summer.

However, one cannot help but feel that someone like Kalas would be a smart signing for the Gers, someone who would help Gerrard fix a key problem in his squad.

Rangers have lost the services of Gareth McAuley and Joe Worrall as their contracts expired. Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic are the only experienced centre-halves and the addition of Edmundson will certainly help the Gers.

But Edmundson still has a lot of time to mature, so it’s prudent for the Glasgow club to add in an experienced head in the squad, as they are set to compete in quite a few competitions.

Kalas would be a solid signing for Rangers should they manage to acquire his services this summer. On the physical front, the Czech Republic defender should be able to cope with the challenges of the Scottish Premiership.

Standing at 6ft, he is good in the air and has a decent turn of pace. The 26-year-old also is a confident passer of the ball and that would definitely be a massive plus for Gerrard.

Verdict

Kalas is at an age where he is entering his prime years, and he has established himself as a really solid defender in the Championship. Thus, this stands as a no-brainer for Gerrard and the Gers.
