Why Kevin Nisbet would be a smart acquisition for Rangers

According to a report from Evening Times, Rangers are keeping tabs on Dunfermline striker Kevin Nisbet.

Kevin Nisbet, 22, came up through the Partick Thistle ranks but wasn’t given much of a chance there. Instead, he impressed last season by scoring 34 goals in 46 games for Raith Rovers.

His sensational season with Raith Rovers didn’t go unnoticed, with Dunfermline snapping him up in the summer.

At Dunfermline, the Scotsman has smashed 11 goals in 19 games this season, becoming one of the most dangerous strikers in the Scottish Championship behind Lawrence Shankland.

Now, Nisbet has sparked interest from Rangers, who already have two prolific goalscorers in Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe.

The Gers boss Steven Gerrard has been able to rotate Morelos and Defoe. Both of them have taken their chances with aplomb but Morelos, in particular, has been in great form so far this campaign, scoring 23 goals in all competitions for club and country.

The Colombian has continued to impress under Gerrard this season, with 22 of his goals coming at club level for Rangers.

Morelos’ red-hot form is attracting plenty of attention from clubs around Europe, with French website Le Progres (h/t The Scottish Sun) claiming that St Etienne are interested in signing him. Defoe, meanwhile, is 37 and his loan deal with the club will end next summer.

With Rangers competing in various competitions and having parted ways with Kyle Lafferty in the summer itself, an injury to any one of the two strikers could leave Gerrard in a crisis. That’s why signing Kevin Nisbet makes sense for the Gers.

Nisbet is starting to make a name for himself with the Pars in Scotland, scoring goals for fun at the moment in the Scottish Championship. He hardly got opportunities to make a name at Partick Thistle but his impressive returns in Scotland’s second division simply cannot be ignored.

Verdict

Signing Nisbet in January would make sense for the Gers as it’ll give him time to adapt to the Premiership. He isn’t near the likes of Morelos and Defoe when it comes to quality but the Glasgow-born striker certainly has the potential to step up to the Premiership.

All in all, Rangers signing Nisbet could help them achieve a better scoring record in the second half of the campaign. Also, he could be a potential replacement for the ageing Defoe, who is due to return Bournemouth at the end of the season.
