Rangers should not hesitate to complete a last-minute loan deal for this 20-year-old ace and here is why

Why Rangers should not hesitate to loan out Jake Hastie to Rotherham United

According to The Scottish Sun, Rangers new signing Jake Hastie is on the verge of joining English League One side Rotherham United on a season-long loan deal for the remainder of the campaign.

The 20-year-old Scottish youth international joined Rangers earlier in the summer on a free transfer from Motherwell but he is yet to make a single league appearance for the club thus far.

Hastie, who has featured on a couple of occasions for the Gers against East Fife and St. Joseph’s in the Scottish League Cup and the Europa League qualifiers respectively, was named on the bench in the club’s 1-0 victory away at St. Mirren in the Scottish Premiership last week, although he didn’t enter the field of play.

Now, as per the report, Gerrard wants Hastie to go out on loan and play regularly at some other club in a bid to further his development and stake a claim for a regular starting role at Ibrox.

Motherwell are interested in taking him back on loan, while Swiss side Zurich have also been credited with an interest in the talented winger, but Rotherham United are apparently pushing the hardest to complete a deal for him before the deadline. (h/t Sun)

A youth product of Motherwell, Hastie made his debut for the Fir Park-outfit back in the 2016-17 season but he was loaned out to Airdrieonians and Alloa Athletic in the third and second tiers of Scottish football thereafter before returning to his boyhood club in January 2019.

Hastie took the top-flight by storm upon his return to Motherwell and netted 7 goals in 15 appearances in the second half of the previous campaign, with a few of them being spectacular strikes from long-range.

The jet-heeled youngster earned rave reviews for his lightning pace, trickery, ability to create space and score goals at Fir Park before Rangers came knocking on the door for his services earlier in the year.

However, he has found himself on the periphery of the first-team at Ibrox in the opening few weeks of the new season and a loan deal seems like the best possible option for Rangers, as well as the player.

A move to Rotherham, or anywhere else for that matter, would see Hastie follow the footsteps of Jordan Rossiter, Jan Alnwick, Ross McCrorie, Glen Middleton and Eduardo Herrera out of the club on loan this summer.

To put things into perspective, it is easy to see why a loan spell at Rotherham United would perfectly suit the interests of Rangers and Hastie.

The 20-year-old is unlikely to receive significant playtime at Ibrox due to stiff competition for places and completing a switch to the Millers is likely to provide him with better first-team prospects.

Rotherham suffered relegation from the Championship last season but they will be looking to mount a challenge for promotion back to the second-tier at the first time of asking and Hastie’s ability to score goals, as well as contribute with valuable assists, should be a massive asset to Paul Warne’s side.

Hastie is still very much in the developmental stage of his career and the English League One, which is not much inferior to the Scottish top-flight in terms of the level of competition and intensity, should be an ideal place for him to hone his skills and work on the flaws in his game.

With that in mind, Jake Hastie’s touted loan move to South Yorkshire should please the Rangers’ fans and they will be hoping that the youngster comes back to Ibrox stronger than ever next summer.
