Rangers must do everything to retain this 22-year-old in order to keep hopes of a title challenge alive next season

Rangers Opinion: Alfredo Morelos needs to be kept at the Ibrox Stadium

According to a report from the Daily Record, Turkish giants Fenerbahce have made contact with Rangers about a possible summer move for star striker Alfredo Morelos with Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt also said to be keen on the 22-year-old’s signature.

Alfredo Morelos is a Colombian international centre-forward, who currently plies his trade in the Scottish Premiership for Steven Gerrard’s Rangers. Currently, they trail table-toppers Celtic by an almost unassailable 10 points.

Morelos is only 22 and is a youth product of Colombian side Independiente Medellin. He made a switch Finnish club HJK Helsinki in the winter of 2016 and impressed during his year-long loan in Europe.

At the end of his successful loan tenure in the Finnish capital, the Helsinki club decided to sign the Colombian prodigy on the permanent deal because of the sheer brilliance of his goalscoring numbers.

Having spent over a year at Helsinki, his record in front of goal was quite fearsome as he has notched up a whopping 46 goals from his 62 appearances for the club. He also got 13 assists which effectively means that he had a telling contribution in every game he played.

Having made the switch to join Scottish side Rangers in the summer after that season, the Colombian really hit the ground running. Since then, there’s been no stopping him as it looks like being coached a legend like Gerrard is improving him as a player.

Morelos has scored 17 goals and got a further 6 assists so far this season from his 26 league games. While he’s also picked up a couple of red cards, his attacking contributions are what really stand out from his play.

With excellent movement all around, he has the ability to read his teammates minds and makes some of the smartest runs possible. He’s great with the ball at his feet too as he uses his pace and guile to glide past opponents with ease.

His finishing skills in the box are unquestionably brilliant as are seen by his rather amazing numbers. He has the right attributes to turn into a top striker and certainly has the potential to play for one of Europe’s biggest clubs.

While interest from bigger European clubs like Dortmund and Fenerbahce are bound to offer large sums of money for the Colombian’s services, Gerrard and Rangers would be better off sticking to a proven talent. That’s why they must keep him at Ibrox.
