Why Rangers should sign Jermain Defoe permanently from Bournemouth

According to Football Insider (h/t The Sun), Rangers striker Jermain Defoe is willing to accept a large pay cut in order to stay at the club.

Jermain Defoe, 37, is currently on loan at Rangers from Bournemouth and has been at the Ibrox since January 2019. He is keen on making that move permanent, with his contract expiring next summer. If a deal can be agreed upon, it means the former England international would stay on for another 12 months until the summer of 2021. (h/t The Sun)

With that in mind, Rangers must use this opportunity to sign Defoe permanently from Bournemouth.

Rangers have performed really well this season so far, with Steven Gerrard’s men climbing to the top of their Europa League group with a stirring 2-2- draw against Feyenoord at the Netherlands on Thursday. Despite sitting at the top of their group, they still need a point to reach the last 32 of the Europa League.

Steven Gerrard has done exceedingly well since taking over at Rangers last year and is eager to end Celtic’s long dominance in Scottish football. Things are hotting up in the title race in Scotland, with both Rangers and Celtic impressing week in and week out. As the Gers continue to push Neil Lennon’s Celtic for the title, someone like Defoe could make a massive difference in the latter stages of the season.

Defoe has impressed so far for the Light Blues, scoring 10 goals in 13 league games. In all, he has 13 goals this season. Despite being 37, the English striker has a lot to offer on and off the pitch. Truly, the veteran forward has been the key influence behind the marked improvement in his teammate Alfredo Morelos’ temperament this season.

Morelos has not only been banging goals left, right and centre but he has also managed to channelise his temperament that spiralled out of control last season, seeing him collect five red cards and 19 yellow cards. The Colombian is yet to be suspended this campaign, amassing only six yellow cards across all competitions.

Defoe deserves massive credit for helping the young Morelos in keeping his calm and not lashing out at opposition players if things aren’t going Rangers’ way. Also, the former Tottenham and Portsmouth star has led the team by example every time he’s been on the pitch.

Verdict

Defoe is a top professional with volumes of experience in the game and knows what it takes to succeed at the highest level. He is a real leader and could guide Rangers to a Scottish Premiership triumph. All in all, the Gers must ensure they sign the veteran English striker permanently.
