Rangers completing a permanent move for their on-loan 22-year-old starlet would help their title challenge next season

Rangers opinion: Gers should sign Joe Worrall permanently

Nottingham Post has reported that Rangers will not look to sign defender Joe Worrall permanently in the summer. The young defender has amassed impressive reviews for his performances over the last six months, being seen as an important player for Steven Gerrard’s side.

The report has added that the Gers were looking to make the move permanent but it now looks like the 22-year-old will return to Nottingham Forest once his loan spell ends.

This, by any means, is a bad move by Rangers and one that they should rectify the minute they get the chance to.

Joe Worrall has shown just how good he is. A cool and calm defender, Worrall is a no-nonsense defender who is just as comfortable with the ball as he is without it.

However, where the 22-year-old stands out is his positioning. Worrall has shown maturity beyond his years.

Manager Steven Gerrard does have a wide variety of defenders at his disposal but only a few have impressed.

Gareth McAuley is 39 years old and that leaves Gerrard with just Connor Goldson and Nikola Katic. While both Goldson and Katic have done relatively well over the last few months, they are Gerrard’s only two options and that has led to complacency at the back, at times this season.

With Worrall on the team-sheet, the two defenders have had to be on their toes abd improved with time. However, without Joe Worrall things might take a turn for the worse.

Given the fact that they’re chasing Celtic, Rangers cannot afford any mistakes, with the Hoops dominating the Premiership.

They dominated the first phase of the league title race, with an 11-point lead between them and the Rangers. It shows the difference in class between the two sides at the moment, and that is something that they need to change.

Conclusion

Rangers need reinforcements. A new striker to help Alfredo Morelos, another winger, and another centre-back like Joe Worrall.

The 22-year-old is talented and has the ability to flourish for the Rangers as he has shown over the last six to seven months. It emphasises why Rangers should hold onto him.
