Should Rafa Benitez Bring In These Players In The Summer?
Do Newcastle have tons of money to spend over the summer? Well, it depends on who you listen too. Some people think Mike Ashley will revert to type and refuse to sanction any major investments.
The truth is though that he does not run the club on a day-to-day basis and Newcastle is a club on a relatively sound financial footing. Given the extra revenue Premier League football brings, there will certainly be a sizeable transfer kitty there for Rafa to spend and he won’t be shy in using it.
It was revealed by The Telegraph that Newcastle are set to provide Benitez with £70million to spend. However, £70million these days is not an amazing amount of money in football. If Toon manage to invest such money, whether or not the particular investment is a wise one though would be open to question. Instead, they can focus on quality for money rather than forcefully spending such big money on big players.
Calum Chambers is an exciting prospect. A good chunk of money was splashed on him by Arsene Wenger to take him to Arsenal from Southampton as a 19-year-old and it could be argued that he hasn’t lived up to the hype. Many a player has gone to the upper end of the English Premier League too early though and it is not fair judge him on his experience there.
Chambers was sent out on loan to Middlesbrough for this season and has shone, albeit arguably without playing enough in his natural position. With doubts over Yedlin and Anita, it seems certain Rafa is looking for a right-back. Chambers’ average rating on WhoScored.com puts him as Boro’s best player, but more interestingly his rating goes up when moving to right-back from centre-back. He would make an excellent signing at anything under £15million.
Tom Cairney has 12 goals and 11 assists in 44 league games from midfield and it is an excellent record. He is someone who can help in the engine room and has the fitness, power and the ability to break forward in the no.10 role and add vital goals to the side.
Cairney has been outstanding this season in an impressive attacking Fulham side and he will be a Premier League player next year, one way or the other. Fulham failing in their play-off promotion bid, as cruel as it sounds, would help Newcastle in their quest to land the man from Nottingham.
The last of this ‘triple threat’ is midfielder James McCarthy. A good passer of a ball, McCarthy has found Premier League games hard to come by this season because of groin and hamstring injuries. His lack of games, regardless of the reason, would be a concern and retaining Shelvey and buying Cairney would take away the need to buy McCarthy and take a risk.
