Liverpool – Rafa Benitez vs Brendan Rodgers

Last season was the time when a lot o the Liverpool fans started to believe that the club was destined for their elusive glory under Brendan Rodgers. In fact they cannot be blamed for that as the young manager seemed to turn things away at Anfield with his new methods and his technical abilities. He seemed like a confident man who knew what he was doing unlike some of his predecessors. He could bring the best out of his players and discipline them to the fullest. Liverpool did exceptionally well under him with an average squad and almost won the league.

But fast forward a year and most of the euphoria surrounding Rodgers is gone. It is true that replacing a player like Suarez is a mammoth job, but there is a consensus that Liverpool brought in too mediocre players with that money and now the squad is weaker than ever although a huge sum has been spent. The recent results have been disappointing and by now a section of the fans are calling for his heads. There are obvious comparisons with Rafa Benitez who led Liverpool to their famous Champions League victory and here we give three reasons why Benitez should edge over this former Swansea manager.

1. Tactical ability

Rafa Benitez was known for his tactical acumen throughout. While Rodgers was praised for his tactics at the beginning, the way he used the diamond to dismantle the Arsenal side last season, by now it has been proved that Rodgers lacks the ability to transform his team according to the situation and he sticks to his own ways. Benitez was a master of this and he could change the playing style of his team inside a match to suit the situation. It is not without any reason that Benitez has been a successful manager at most of Europe and his tactical acumen must be praised.
