Premier League opinion: The most expensive PL XI ever

The rise of transfer fees from two decades ago to the present day has been astronomical, to say the least. Paris Saint-Germain recently broke the transfer record in world football by signing Neymar for a staggering £200million and with the way things are going, that fee might be surpassed in a year or two.

The Premier League has seen a number of occasions where mammoth amounts of money have been spent. Here is a team of the most expensive transfer signings in the history of the Premier League.

Kepa Arrizabalaga

The 24-year-old became the world’s most expensive goalkeeper after Chelsea spent a mammoth £71.6million on him in order to replace Thibaut Courtois last summer.

Kyle Walker

Manchester City went on a huge spending spree in the summer of 2017 which included the signing of Kyle Walker from Tottenham Hotspur for an initial fee of £45million. The full-back has been an integral part of City’s side since then.

Virgil van Dijk

The most expensive defender in the world, van Dijk was signed by Liverpool for a world record £75million fee from fellow Premier League side Southampton. The addition of the dutchman has drastically changed the Reds’ performances and they are genuine title contenders now.

Aymeric Laporte

Another massive Manchester City signing, Aymeric Laporte made the switch from Spanish side Athletic Bilbao for a then club-record £57million.

The marauding French full-back was signed from former Ligue 1 champions Monaco for £52million in the summer of 2017.

Kevin de Bruyne

After Chelsea let Kevin de Bruyne leave for Wolfsburg, the Belgian showed the world what he’s made of in the Bundesliga. Manchester City signed the midfield maestro for £55million in 2015 and he has been worth every penny.

Paul Pogba

The former Manchester United prodigy was allowed to join Juventus for free in 2012. The Frenchman turned out to be one of the best midfielders in the Serie A, which made the Red Devils move back for him for a then word-record £89million

Christian Pulisic

Chelsea swopped in quick to sign Borussia Dortmund’s 20-year-old starlet Christian Pulisic for a fee of £57.6million in January. Although the American is yet to join the Blues squad, he is expected to be a fine fit in the Premier League.

Angel di Maria

The Real Madrid superstar made a huge switch to Manchester United in 2014 for an outrageous £59.7million. However, the Argentine left the club after just one season to join Paris Saint-Germain.

One of Leicester City’s most influential players in their miraculous title win back in 2016, Riyad Mahrez joined Manchester City for a club-record £60million last summer.
