Premier League Team Of The Week (9-11 May) Featuring Manchester United And Manchester City Stars

Premier League

David de Gea – Manchester United returned to winning ways against Crystal Palace, but they owed a lot to their goalkeeper, who has been their standout player this season and a big part of the reason that they will be playing Champions League football next season. He made a number of stops to prevent Palace, including a wonderful save from Glenn Murray.

Vurnon Anita – The Dutchman played extremely well at full back as Newcastle put an end to their run of losses against West Brom. Anita is a midfielder by trade, but he covered well at right back, especially at the back as the West Brom midfielders created little down his side. He also gave his side an option going forwards and put in a couple of nice crosses into the box.

Robert Huth – Leicester continued their incredible form as they played Southampton and their upturn in form can be attributed partly to the signing of Robert Huth. The on loan defender has certainly added quality to the backline and showed his aerial dominance on Saturday as Graziano Pelle got little out of the centre half. He also made a few key interceptions to prevent Southampton creating many clear cut chances.

Jason Shackell – Although Burnley went down on Saturday, their centre half Jason Shackell was in top form and he could be one of the few players to be targeted by Premier League clubs in the summer. He organised the defence well and showed his strength in the tackle as Hull struggled to make a breakthrough. Shackell also showed his aerial ability winning a number of duels in the air.

Patrick van Aanholt – Sunderland have won their last two matches as they attempt to fight against relegation, with their win against Everton lifting them above rivals Newcastle. Their left back has been one of the most consistent players this season. His work rate showed on Saturday as he managed to stop Coleman and Lennon from having an impact, while also contributing in the final third.

Riyad Mahrez – The Algerian has been in and out of the Leicester side this season, but he is one of the most skillful players at the club. He showed that on Saturday as he managed to score two goals which highlighted his abilities in the final third and his awareness of the space around him. If Leicester stay up, he could be a revelation next season.

Steven N’Zonzi – Despite having little to play for, Stoke put in one of the best performances of the weekend to embarrass Tottenham 3-0, making them the second club from North London to lose at the Brittania. Their all action midfielder put in a performance of real quality which was topped off with a goal, which was well finished by the former Blackburn player. He bullied the Tottenham midfielders and showed that he could compete with the very best in this division.

Tom Cleverley – Aston Villa want to retain the services of Tom Cleverley after his performances have improved under Tim Sherwood. He looks like the player who played a part at Manchester United and got on the fringes of the England squad. If he continues to play like he has been, then a recall to the national set up could be on the cards. He scored the winning goal against West Ham which was his third in as many games.

David Silva – Manchester City blew QPR away on Sunday and ended up relegating the London club. City haven’t been at their best in recent months, but this was a reminder of what they can do on the football pitch. David Silva was in excellent form as he drifted between the lines and created numerous chances for his side, while he also managed to get on the scoresheet himself, which was his 12th goal of the campaign.

Sergio Aguero – The Argentine has had a mixed season, but he showed his class again on Sunday with some very good forward play. His skill was there for all to see as he gave the QPR defence all sorts of problems with his dribbling and finishing abilities. He scored a hat-trick including a penalty and some poor defending, but that shouldn’t take away from the forward who was very calm in front of goal. He is set to win the golden boot this season which is a fabulous achievement. However Aguero will look back on this season with some regret as he and his club should have achieved a lot more.

Danny Graham – His Sunderland career hasn’t been very good overall, but the striker has played a pivotal role in their survival efforts. On Saturday, he was one of the best players on the pitch as he put in a brilliant performance, including his first goal for Sunderland, and his first goal in the Premier League since 2013. His hold up play was excellent and he linked the play well with the Sunderland midfield.
