Arsenal Player Ratings vs Newcastle United: Bellerin And Coquelin Steal The Show Once Again

Arsenal secured their second win of the season with a hard fought 1-0 victory against Newcastle, who were reduced to 10 men within the first 15 minutes of the game. Theo Walcott started upfront for the gunners but struggled to find any rhythm of the sort. Newcastle defended valiantly following the 16th-minute dismissal of Aleksandar Mitrovic but were undone after their captain Fabricio Coloccini deflected Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s shot into his own net. Arsenal dominated possession for long durations of the match, which also saw seven yellow cards.

Petr Cech 6

Didn’t have to make a save en route to his second successive clean sheet. Was a virtual spectator in both halves as he ensured a comfortable afternoon between the sticks. Can’t remember a match where he had so little to do.

Hector Bellerin

Hector Bellerin 8

Should have had a penalty when tripped by Thauvin in the first half, was brilliant going forward after Newcastle were reduced to 10 men. Didn’t have a lot to do defensively but was a constant threat down the right wing.

Gabriel Paulista 7

His task was made much easier after the red card to Aleksandar Mitrovic but was alert when called into action a couple of times. After struggling against Liverpool on Monday night, these 90 minutes would have seemed like a walk in a park.

Laurent Koscielny 7

Arsenal looked much more solid with Koscielny back in the starting XI. With Newcastle reduced to 10 men, he didn’t have much to deal with but his presence had a calming influence, on the whole, back line.

Nacho Monreal 7

Seems to be getting better with each game, combined well with Sanchez on the left flank and was a constant threat in the final third. He managed to deal with the threat of Sissoko quite comfortably whenever he threatened to push forward.

Francis Coquelin 8

Francis Coquelin

Made some crucial interception in the middle of the park. After a tough game against Crystal Palace, he seems to be back in his groove with two solid performances. Was a victim of many reckless tackles from the Newcastle players.

Santi Cazorla 7

Arsenal captain for the day struggled early on but soon recovered to dictate play in central midfield. Still doesn’t look 100% on his game. Saw a lot of balls but couldn’t break down a resolute Newcastle defense.

Aaron Ramsey 8

In the absence of Mesut Ozil, he excelled in a more advanced role. Newcastle’s defense struggled throughout the game to cope with his direct running and incisive passing. Had a powerful shot blocked which led to the opener?

Alexis Sanchez 7

Still doesn’t look 100% fit, hence couldn’t influence the game as much as he would have liked but still threatened whenever he got the ball. Needs a goal maybe to settle the nerves. Had a shot saved by Krul in the first half?

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain 7.5

Returned to the starting XI in place of Ozil and was lively throughout, particularly in the second half. It was his powerful strike which led to Coloccini’s own goal.

Arsenal's Alex Ox Chamberlain will be itching to prove himself in the absence of Alexis Sanchez

Theo Walcott 5

Was given a rare start ahead of Giroud but couldn’t make much of an impression after a disappointing performance up front. Missed two glorious chances in the first half to open the scoring following which he became practically non-existent.
