Perfect fit for the Premier League? Here’s what the fans can expect from Watford’s potential new signing

Premier League club Watford have reportedly agreed on a deal with Bologna for left-back Adam Masina.

The 24-year-old has 100 appearances to his name, since making his breakthrough at Bologna in 2013. Over the course of the last season, Masina made 35 appearances in all competitions. The Morocco-born defender has a year left on his current deal with Bologna, who finished 15th in the Serie A this past term.

Masina would become Watford’s second summer signing following Gerard Deulofeu’s permanent move on a five-year deal from Barcelona.

Watford are in dire need of fresh faces to improve in the upcoming season. Javi Gracia needs to sort out his defence after conceding 64 goals in the 2017/18 campaign. And signing Masina from Bologna is a step in the right direction as Watford have struggled to find the ideal left-back.

Marvin Zeegelaar failed to impose himself in the Premier League despite making a promising start to his Watford career. Meanwhile, Jose Holebas endured an inconsistent campaign.

The Greek international could not keep pace with the intensity of the English top-flight and he made numerous errors. After all, Holebas is entering the twilight years of his career and he will turn 34 in August, meaning the Hornets are in desperate need of a new left-back.

In Adam Masina, Watford would get an explosive full-back, who can also play on the wing. Throughout his time in Serie A, he has been a tricky customer to stop down the left flank, marauding forward with pace and power to beat the defenders.

The 24-year-old is quite tall and his height comes in handy during aerial encounters. Masina is hard to shrug off or get past due to his burly frame. He is excellent at going forward and equally disciplined when it comes to defending.

The left-back is great with the ball at his feet and a reliable passer. Due to his height and physicality, Masina is a major threat in set-piece situations.

However, the 24-year-old is quite hot-headed and has lost his temper a good number of times in the Serie A. Masina tends to find it difficult to keep his emotions in check if goaded and can have lapses in concentration when it comes to defending.

That said, Watford will get a solid left-back in Masina. He is quite young and will only get better as he gains more experience in the Premier League. Due to his physical attributes, the player should find no trouble adapting to the demands of the English top-flight.
