Pellegrini joining hands with his £32m former protege would be an absolute steal for West Ham in the summer – agreed?

West Ham opinion: Nicolas Otamendi linked with the Hammers – Good move?

According to a report in Daily Star (h/t Marca), Manchester City centre-back Nicolas Otamendi will leave the club this summer, with West Ham and Wolves interested in making a swoop sooner rather than later.

The Argentina international has been short of game time this season, with manager Pep Guardiola preferring to rotate between Aymeric Laporte, John Stones and Vincent Kompany more often than not. As a result of that, he is looking for a move away from the Etihad. (h/t Daily Star)

On the other hand, the 31-year-old, who arrived at City for £32m in 2015 (h/t BBC), did sign a new contract in January of last year that will run until the summer of 2022. But with the manager’s preference in clear sight this season, it is clear why the player wants a move out of the club.

Now, Wolves and West Ham are being touted as potential suitors (h/t Daily Star). Here’s why the latter should beat the former for this swoop:

Hammers require one more centre-back for consistency

West Ham have had a decent season under the tutelage of Manuel Pellegrini. Despite a poor start to the campaign, losing their opening four games, the Hammers are 11th in the table,

If we look at the team, they have some quality players going forward, who can really hurt the opposition defences week in week out. However, they have lacked consistency at the back in more than a few games.

There are some games in which we would find them organised and defending well, while in others the leakage of goals would be aplenty. All in all, letting in 54 goals in 36 league appearances needs to be improved upon ahead of next season.

As of now, West Ham have three options for the centre-back position – Fabian Balbuena, Issa Diop, and Angelo Ogbonna.

Out of this lot, Diop has been consistent, while the other two have been switched around, partly due to Balbuena’s injury. Ogbonna has struggled to be solid on a weekly basis.

Hence, it is clear that the club would do good by signing another quality centre-back in the summer, who can provide the level of consistency.

Conclusion

Having mentioned everything about why West Ham require a new centre-back, Nicolas Otamendi could be an ideal addition to their squad from next season onwards.
