Former Aston Villa and Arsenal player Paul Merson encouraged Aston Villa to have no fear when they go up against Arsenal in their opening game of the season and also stated that Villa can upset Arsenal’s premier league start.
“You don’t want to be Aston Villa going to Arsenal first game of the season,”
“I know people say you’ve got to play there and all that, but to be honest you’d rather be playing Cardiff at home than Arsenal away.
“If they could nick something that would be great for them. It would give them a chance when they play Chelsea and Liverpool.
“It’s a tough start for them and they certainly could have had it easier, but Paul Lambert will not want to scare them.
“He’ll tell them they’ve got a chance, and they have got a chance.”
“All teams, especially young teams like Villa, need points early or you find yourself in September looking up at everyone else.”
Villa’s last success at Emirates came in 2011 when Darren Bent scored a brace to secure a famous win for the villians. Villa have a decent record at the Emirates having won two, drawn two and lost four in the eight games they played at Emirates. So, Aston Villa fans will hope their team comes back from the capital city with at least a point.
