Outstanding Lovren, Brilliant Salah – The best and the worst rated Liverpool stars vs Man City

Mohamed Salah

Manchester City 1-2 Liverpool: Reds Show City How It’s Done

It was a night that started so well for Manchester City but ended with bitter disappointment, as they needed three goals to take the game to a tie. They got off to a dream start after 2 minutes but the Liverpool defence stayed solid and kept repelling City’s quick attacks, leading to Pep’s disappointment.

On the other hand, Liverpool will be absolutely delighted and will be convinced that they can now go on and win this tournament. All of their players were brilliant this evening, particularly their defenders. Every single team in the premier league knows how hard it is to keep Man City’s goalscorers at bay but Liverpool are the only team who can say they’ve really achieved it.

Liverpool Player Ratings

Loris Karius – 7/10

The young goalkeeper actually only had two saves to make in the entire game, which is a testament to his defenders. When he was called upon, he did a good job.

Trent Alexander-Arnold – 8/10

The right-back had a very good game for Liverpool. He dealt with the threat of Sane and Silva very well and they never looked like scoring. He was dogged in his pursuit of them and tackled well all game.

Dejan Lovren – 8/10

The 28-year-old centre-back had come under a lot of criticism this season but since Christmas, the Liverpool back-line has looked reformed and Lovren is a massive part of this. Won his aerial duels well and tackled well too.

Andrew Robertson

Virgil van Dijk – 8/10

Also had an excellent game and he seems to be the reason why Liverpool’s defence is now so solid. He won six of his aerial duels and never really looked uncomfortable after the first goal. Has made a massive difference.

Andy Robertson – 7/10

The left-back was the only one of the Liverpool defence who I can give less than an eight, purely because he did less than the other three. Was also lucky not to concede a penalty when he held on to Sterling’s shirt early on. However, he grew into the game and nothing really looked like getting past him.

James Milner – 7.5/10

Milner adds real experience to the Liverpool midfield and is exactly the man you’d want on nights like this. He kept the three-man midfield disciplined and stepped into Henderson’s shoes well. He tackled hard and won his fair share of headers.

Georginio Wijnaldum – 7.5/10

Constantly underrated in Liverpool’s midfield. Slated often for not doing enough, what Wijnaldum does do well is keep the midfield ticking. Had to do his fair share of defensive work and stayed solid in the middle of the park.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain – 8/10

Oxlade-Chamberlain has been an absolute revelation in these two legs of the Champions League clash and has looked a completely different player.

Roberto Firmino

Mo Salah – 8/10

To be honest, it’s difficult not to run out of superlatives to describe this man. Stayed patient all night and worked very hard defensively. Got his reward with a goal in the end. The complete winger.

Sadio Mane – 8.5/10

Looked dangerous when going forward and had his end product been a little better, he’d have probably grabbed himself a goal as well. Worked very hard for his team defensively and stuck to Klopp’s gameplan throughout.

Roberto Firmino – 8.5/10

Firmino had one shot and scored one goal. He took his chance when it came. What was more impressive, however, was his willingness to work for the team.

Substitutes

Ragnar Klavan – 6.5/10

Replaced Firmino in the 81st minute, presumably to shore up the Liverpool defence and hold on to the lead.

Nathaniel Clyne – 6.5/10

Came on in the 81st minute to give Trent Alexander-Arnold the rest he deserved. Looked solid defensively.

Danny Ings – N/A

Came on in the 89th minute to replace Mo Salah.
