Outstanding Dalot, Brilliant Shaw – The best and the worst rated Man United stars in the 3-0 win vs Young Boys

Man United Player Ratings vs Young Boys: Here’s how the Red Devils fared

Paul Pogba scored two first-half goals and supplied an assist as Manchester United crushed Young Boys 3-0 in their opening game of the Champions League group stage on Wednesday.

Anthony Martial scored for the visitors by slotting home Pogba’s through ball just past the hour mark as United made light work of their Swiss opponents.

Played on an artificial pitch in Bern, Young Boys threatened in patches but never truly looked like staging a remarkable comeback.

Manchester United Player Ratings

David De Gea – 7/10

Made a couple of important first-half saves to keep things level before United got the breakthrough.

Diogo Dalot – 8/10

Excellent debut! Dalot never looked like someone playing his first game for United. He looked assured in possession, put in delicious crosses and barring a couple of wobbles, he was defensively competent too.

Chris Smalling – 7/10

Smalling continued his late resurgence in form with another solid performance in central defence. He kept his passing simple, headed away the crosses that came into the box and made a vital block too.

Victor Lindelof – 6/10

Lindelof had a few shaky moments in the opening stages of the game but settled down with time. Passed the ball from the back with good confidence and will be content with his second-half display.

Luke Shaw – 8/10

Shaw earned the penalty that allowed Paul Pogba to double United’s lead. Should have also had an assist for Rashford, who hit the outside of the post with a deft touch. A very solid return to the side.

Nemanja Matic – 6/10

Matic was sloppy in possession and lacked his usual calmness on the ball. Got a little better after the interval.

Fred – 4/10

Fred struggled to impose himself as he ceded possession on a number of occasions. Picked up a booking for a needless foul and never really settled into the game before being taken off.

Paul Pogba – 8/10

United’s skipper on the night, Pogba led the team by example. He scored a left-footed scorcher to open the scoring before burying the spot-kick. Showed good composure on the ball and put it on a plate for Martial to kill the game.

Anthony Martial – 6/10

Looked anonymous in the first half but grew into the game after the break. Scored United’s third on the night via a wicked deflection.

Marcus Rashford – 5/10

Rashford worked very hard and came close to finding the back of the net but his deft touch hit the bar and went out. However, he endured a frustrating night where nothing went his way.

Romelu Lukaku – 6/10

Lacked service for the majority of the game but was always a pest for the Young Boys defenders.

Substitutes

Juan Mata – 4/10

Mata replaced Fred with 20 minutes left in the game. Came close to scoring United’s fourth.

Marouane Fellaini – 5/10

Fellaini came on for Rashford and packed the midfield.
