Opinion – Tottenham should not have second thoughts about signing this £35m-rated midfield ace

Why Tottenham should sign Abdoulaye Doucoure from Watford

According to reports in the Mirror, Watford midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure is wanted by Tottenham Hotspur as a replacement for Victor Wanyama. The Malian, who played for France U21, is rated around £35m and has attracted many admirers for his performances in the past 12-15 months.

Other European giants namely – Liverpool, PSG and Arsenal are also keeping close tabs on the player.

As per the report, Spurs are looking to replace Wanyama in the midfield as the Kenyan has struggled to get into the starting line-up ever since he got injured for four months last season.

And Doucoure could be an ideal player for them, considering their current squad and playing system. Here’s why:

Doucoure could offer midfield command

A defensive midfielder by trade, Doucoure is a commanding presence in central areas of the pitch. He is a part of a Watford team that has done remarkably well this season. Attribute-wise, the Malian is an incisive passer of the ball, can run past players in tight areas and also pick out accurate key passes to create a chance towards the goal.

In the 4-2-2-2 system he plays under Javi Gracia, there is an added responsibility resting on the shoulders of central midfielders to cover grounds in both facets of the game. Doucoure is a dutiful runner of the ball as well, tracking the runs of attacking midfielders. His physicality helps him pose a threat in both boxes.

Overall, the 25-year-old is a complete midfield package. He can perform various roles in a demanding system. And hence, Spurs could get a gem of a player if they sign him in the near future.

The North Londoners can not only get an ideal replacement for Wanyama but also an able exponent who can take Moussa Dembele’s place if needed.

Tottenham failed to sign even a single player over the summer transfer window, however, they should prioritize strengthening the squad in January. Furthermore, Doucoure is a quality player who will enhance their midfield quality if signed.

From his point of view, making a move to a Champions League team would be a feather in his cap. Doing so could help him establish a place in the Spurs team, before pushing for a place in the French national squad.
