Opinion: Should Arsenal Sell Cazorla If The Right Deal Comes?

Should Arsenal Sell Cazorla?

A transfer that has been floating about in the air could finally take place with Arsene Wenger trying to sign Atletico Madrid’s Arda Turan. The Turkish player has been linked with a move to the Premier League for a while and this could be the ideal moment for him to sign for one of the biggest clubs in England.

Another story that has been developing is regarding the future of Santi Cazorla, the 30-year-old Spaniard was one of the players of the season for the Gunners as they defended their FA Cup crown and in a much deeper role, he thrived, being the engine at the heart of midfield.

This all was achieved thanks to the injuries to a lot of their midfielders. Jack Wilshere, Mathieu Flamini and Mikel Arteta all missed chunks of the season and playing Cazorla started as an experiment but ended up being one of the highlights of the season for Arsenal. He, alongside Francis Coquelin worked magnificently for the Gunners but that could be ending pretty soon.

Home sweet home

Santi Cazorla has been linked with a move back to Spain, after signing for the Gunners from Malaga; it seems Atletico are interested in bringing the player back home. The midfielder would be a great fit for the club and with him ageing; he could do well to stay away from the physicality of the Premier League and could thrive at the Madrid club as well.

He is the maestro in midfield for Arsenal, but Wilshere has been revelling in his deep role for England and will surely occupy that position once the season starts. Santi could be relegated to the bench as the winger’s roles would be occupied by Walcott and Sanchez when the season resumes. Cazorla might not want to sit on the bench for long durations and he could move in search of regular football.

The question for Arsenal would be regarding the price that Atletico are willing to pay, if it matches the valuation of the Gunners, they should be letting go of the ageing Spanish midfielder. It isn’t because he isn’t good enough to play for the club or at the highest level; it is just a plain old good business. No one would be willing to pay top dollar for a player in his 30’s, so when Arsenal have the chance of making a decent amount from the sale, they should take it, no questions asked.

Cazorla still has a couple of great years in him and he has shown just how versatile he can be for any club he plays. It might be a bittersweet moment for him to leave Arsenal but the Gunners should know there is no point in keeping a player who wouldn’t play every game but would be looking forward to playing in his home country.
