Opinion: Manchester United Should Dodge A Bullet By Not Signing This Dutch Star

Every team needs a good central defensive pairing, that can be the difference between a run to the top of the league or battling it out in the lower depths of the league and Manchester United seem set to be moving in on a defender who had impressed us all in the 2014 World Cup. While United did sign Daley Blind, they were also expected to sign another Dutch defender, Stefan De Vrij. However, De Vrij ended up at Lazio and it seems that scouts are being sent to Italy by almost all the top Premier League clubs as they now try to sign the defender.

With De Vrij actually doing extremely well for the club, is it time for him to make his mark in the Premier League for Manchester United?

Is he ready for the Premier League?

The biggest question to come out from De Vrij’s transfer during this off season was why did no Premier League club buy him despite tracking him for almost a year and then also seeing just how good he was in the World Cup?

The fact that he was taken up by Lazio just shows that teams were not willing to take a gamble, which could have actually paid off if they did sign the player. De Vrij ended up in Italy, where probably he could learn a lot more about the art of defending than by staying in Holland or moving to England.

In all probability, he will stay in Italy even after this season and grow and hone his skills as he tries to become a top defender for Holland, there is no doubt that the youngster still has a lot of time on his hands and his time in Italy will surely help him become a much better defender. This is probably why Manchester United could think twice before they decide on signing the player.

De Vrij could become a great player, but he is not one at the moment, this youngster still needs time to play in a league which is not only fast and furious but also physically taxing, something which the Italian league does not have. De Vrij has all the requisites to become a great player and maybe a couple of seasons in the Serie A will make him the player he can be and then he could shift to the Premier League but not now.
