Opinion: Could This Bundesliga Winner Save Liverpool Next Season?

There are losses and there are terrible losses but what happened to Liverpool on the last day of this season is not a terrible loss it was an embarrassment, the 6-1 loss to Stoke was their worst defeat in the Premier League era and this came after the Raheem Sterling issue got out of hand. Sterling was left on the bench after a few choice words were spoken out by his advisor and agent, who quickly denied he said anything that put Liverpool in a bad light, either way this poor showing probably seems like Raheem could also be on his way out.

Brendan Rodgers

Spare a though for Steven Gerrard who seemed to be the only player wanting to play for the Liverpool jersey, the team were horrible and this could have been Rodgers’ last game for Liverpool. There were already doubts being cast over his ability to get the best out of the team and with 3 losses in the last 3 games, it could be the end of the reign for the Northern Irishman. The vultures are already circling over Rodger’s head and he acknowledged after the match that although he would like to continue at the club if the owners feel he has to go, so be it.

Who to replace Rodgers in a sinking ship?

The choices are many but the problem is that Liverpool need to bring in a coach that can not only fix this debacle but also be there for the future of the club. The FSG group have always wanted a young coach who can grow with the team and while Rodgers did look like the perfect candidate last season, this season Liverpool have regressed back to when Rodgers first got the team. Their attack is woeful, their defence is a shambles and there seems to be no team spirit, maybe selling off players like Agger and not dealing with the Gerrard contract situation properly was not the best way to go.

Rafael Benitez would be the smart choice from bookmakers and from fans as well, the Spaniard still has a home at Liverpool, is loved by most of the fans and provided them their best ever years during his spell at the club, barring the last season where they were really poor, Rafa got them to two Champions League finals and the club were a force in the Premier League as well. The problem would be not only his age but he could have more power than FSG in certain terms of the club and more importantly, you rarely ever go back to your exes though Chelsea fans will debate that point.

FSG could go with Frank De Boer who has been brilliant at Ajax, but he has never had to deal with a club who are facing the complicated situation that Liverpool are in. Ajax are known to have a great youth academy and are the best team financially in the Dutch league, De Boer would be a good choice but not the right one yet, he still needs experience in coaching.

The rise of Borussia Dortmund under Jurgen Klopp
Jurgen Klopp

All signs though point towards Jurgen Klopp, he was contacted by FSG, but he did not want to leave Dortmund when Rodgers took over 3 years ago, now Klopp is free and raring to go. Liverpool would be the ideal club for him, they don’t have the resources but neither did Dortmund. They have an amazing set of passionate fans and the board are also pretty supportive of their managers plus he would be able to get the pride of playing for a club like Liverpool back into the players and he certainly would not take such performances lightly. If it happens, this would be the best outcome for Liverpool but we have to just wait and watch, Brendan still believes he can turn it around and we all remember what he achieved for Liverpool the last time they finished outside the top 4, short memory span? They had the best Premier League season of their lives and were just a whisker away from the title.
