Manchester City opinion: 3 things that Guardiola has to do this summer

With the season officially over and Manchester City completing the domestic treble, the Cityzens have to start looking towards the future. While Pep Guardiola has established and created a rather incredible team to move his vision even further, there is no stopping in the quest to achieve perfection.

Not to mention, with a few player ageing, the club needs to make sure that they use the window well and add replacements in the right areas. Fernandinho’s heir will be the biggest job and a left-back should also be in consideration but Oleksandr Zinchenko’s performances have changed that.

Vincent Kompany’s departure to Anderlecht does leave the club without depth at the back. That being said, here are three things that Manchester City have to do this summer in order to defend the league title and also go all the way in the Champions League.

Replace Fernandinho

The subtle destroyer, Manchester City’s underrated star and something that Pep Guardiola has always had in his team. At Barcelona, he had Sergio Busquets, at Bayern Munich he had both Thiago Alcantara and Javi Martinez and now at Manchester City, he has Fernandinho.

It’s a crucial position in a Guardiola team but the Brazilian epitomizes the best of all. He effortlessly combines what Alcantara, Busquets and Martinez do to make him arguably the most important player in Manchester City.

But at the age of 33, there are only so many more games he can run and replacing him will be tough. Sure Ilkay Gundogan has done well but the German lacks the defensive solidity that Fernandinho provides.

It’s why Manchester City have been linked with moves for Rodri, Tanguy Ndombele and even Thomas Partey over the last few months. But no matter whom they choose, it has to be someone, otherwise next season, they may not be able to cope.

Add another center-back

Vincent Kompany has officially left the club and that leaves the club with a massive hole in Manchester City’s back-line. Combine that with Nicolas Otamendi’s search for game-time and it leaves the club with just two centre-backs.

That is if the Argentine gets his move away, and having been linked with Wolves and even Atletico Madrid, it just might happen. They need new players but at the same time, it doesn’t have to be a first-team star given just how well Aymeric Laporte and John Stones have performed.

The two have clicked well together and that has seen the club solidify their first-team berth. Instead, what the club needs is a rotation star or someone who can compete for a first-team spot but would be comfortable sitting on the bench as well.

Vincent Kompany did that with ease and so did Otamendi, which is why the search will be a tough one. Harry Maguire has been linked, but the Englishman at £90million may just be a little too much.

Replace Sergio Aguero

30 years old now but there seems to be no stopping Sergio Aguero. Yet another season where the super-striker has netted 20 plus goals and has further established himself as one of Manchester City’s best.

Now their unprecedented top scorer in all competitions, the Argentine is ageing and doing it with a lot of style. But the Premier League is easily one of the toughest leagues in the world both physically and mentally, which is why the club needs to look towards the future.

Sure Manchester City did add Gabriel Jesus to their books but the 2018 World Cup has really affected his confidence.

Combine that with the fact that the Mirror has reported that Manchester City will offer him as a make-weight for any deal with Rodri, and it leaves the club without a back-up.

It doesn’t make for good reading and Aguero will only grow older from here on in. The club needs a new striker and the transition has to happen this summer.
