Klopp gets an incredible response after asking journalists if the Napoli penalty was right

One person backs Napoli’s penalty decision against Liverpool

Liverpool were on the end of a controversial penalty decision as the Champions League holders were beaten in their first group game this season.

Napoli had won the corresponding tie in the previous campaign and ran out 2-0 winners this time, but the Reds gave them a real fight this time around.

Liverpool had some quality chances to break the deadlock while Napoli were denied thrice by Adrian to keep the scores level.

Jurgen Klopp

The match was between two quality sides and not an inch was given, but the home side got a bit of luck in the second half.

Jose Callejon was tripped in the penalty box by Andy Robertson in the 82nd minute, with the referee pointing to the spot.

Replays suggested that Robertson had missed the ball and the man before the Napoli star threw himself to the ground, but even VAR didn’t reject the referee’s initial call.

Dries Mertens scored from the spot and a rare Virgil van Dijk error coupled with some miscommunication between the left-back and keeper, allowed Fernando Llorente to score the second goal.

Klopp unhappy with the penalty

It was understandable why Jurgen Klopp was not happy with the penalty decision.

James Pearce of the Athletic shared what the German manager asked in the post-match press conference, and one journalist seemed to agree with the referee.

This account shows that the majority of the people in the room didn’t agree with the referee’s decision, and it was a surprise why it wasn’t overturned by VAR.

Liverpool, however, should be proud of how they played against the Italian side. This was the toughest Champions League group game this season and on another day, they could have come out with a point.
