Offence Or Defence? Where Should Tottenham Strengthen To Make It To The Champions League

The Premier League isn’t called the best league in the world for nothing, almost every year 6-7 clubs try to fight it out for the top 4 places in the league and UEFA Champions League qualification. One of the clubs trying to achieve that is Tottenham who have looked pretty decent and even recently beat arch rivals Chelsea 5-3 thanks to a Harry-kane of goals(hurricane, yeah I know, pretty poor). Tottenham currently lie 5th in the league standings and are just 2 points behind 4th placed Southampton.

Tottenham have been getting better under Mauricio Pochettino and have looked pretty good in the Europa League as well. They could qualify for the Champions league either by winning the Europa League or by at least finishing 4th in the league but whatever they do, they would need to strengthen their squad especially when they start going into the deep end of the season.

Upgrade the arsenal and the defence

We have to be a little honest and jealous at the same time, Tottenham have been riding the Harry Kane brigade for quite some time this season. The Englishman has taken over the scoring duties from more experienced campaigners like Roberto Soldado & Emmanuel Adebayor and he deserves to be in the team because of his performances but Tottenham would need to buy a couple of players to ensure Kane doesn’t burn out and the goals don’t dry out.

Soldado and Adebayor have only scored a combined 5 goals this season while Kane has scored a staggering 15 on his own. Tottenham don’t really have any other strikers of repute in the team and have the likes of Eriksen and Chaldi to thank, the due have scored 16 goals between them and both look like they have found a perfect home after last season when questions were being raised about their performances and time at Tottenham.

They should also thank Erik Lamela for finally looking like the player he was at Roma, the Argentine has looked a class apart but his consistency has been lacking from this season, however he still is a threat for the Tottenham side and has chipped in with 4 goals.

Tottenham don’t have a problem getting support from the midfield, they have a lot of talent in those ranks, and it is the defence which will be a worry for the Spurs fans. The central defensive pairing doesn’t look the steadiest with the likes of Kaboul, Chiriches. Dier and Vertonghen. Spurs have conceded 27 goals in 20 games and any team conceding more than a goal a game cannot be considered good defensively.

Even if injuries do hit the defence, they don’t really have a centre back that can play there, sure they can bring in Naughton to do a job but he really isn’t a centre back and could be waylaid easily by the better strikers in the league. Tottenham should invest in the transfer market and sign a striker and a defender as soon as possible. Spending £20-30 million to ensure they qualify for the UEFA Champions League would be considered as peanuts to the vast amounts of money they would get from playing in the competition next season.
