Nottingham Forest would be better off avoiding this 26-year-old Championship star and here’s why

Nottingham Forest opinion: Forest shouldn’t make a move for Gavin Massey

The Daily Mail has reported that Nottingham Forest and Queens Park Rangers are all set to battle for Wigan Athletic winger Gavin Massey. The 26-year-old didn’t have the best start to the season, thanks to a myriad of injuries, but has recovered fine.

Since his return, Massey has burst onto the scene in recent months, with a string of rather impressive performances for the Latics.

While he has scored just one goal in his last five appearances, Massey’s speed and directness have helped Wigan move out of the relegation zone. At the moment, the Latics sit three points above the relegation zone, having won five points in their last five games.

Massey’s return from injury has been key and it’s one of the reasons why both Nottingham Forest and QPR are after the winger. But what sweetens the deal is the fact that his current deal with Wigan expires at the end of the season.

While Massey is keen on re-signing with Wigan if they avoid relegation (Daily Mail), there is a chance that both Forest and QPR can convince him to leave.

QPR could find it tough to convince him though as they sit only one place above Wigan Athletic. Nottingham Forest have an outside chance of making the promotion playoffs and this could prove to be a massive difference. But despite that, Forest really shouldn’t make a move for Gavin Massey.

While the 26-year-old will add pace and power to Forest’s attack, Massey has hit his ceiling. This is probably the highest the 26-year-old can grow, and though he may improve in certain areas, it won’t be enough.

Moreover, the Tricky Trees already have the likes of Matty Cash, Ben Osborn, Jamie Ward, Joe Lolley, El Arbi Hillel Soudani and Arvin Appiah at their disposal.

Both Cash and Lolley are having a fine season, combining to score 14 goals and create 10 goals. Furthermore, the other four wingers have produced nine goals this season.

This is because Soudani has been struggling with injuries and Appiah only made his debut in January. It shows the variety that manager Martin O’Neill has at his disposal and given the fact that there are other areas the club needs to strengthen, it makes no sense to add Gavin Massey.

Conclusion

While there is no doubting Gavin Massey’s pace and power in the final third, manager Martin O’Neil has a catalogue of players to call upon. Avoiding Massey would be a wise move by Nottingham Forest.
